How to stop being so serious (lighten up)?
I’m 17 (male) and have a question to ask. I need some help on how to lighten up more. I have the tendency to be quite serious as a result of many factors. I think I may be placing a little too much of an emphasis on school work (you know, get good grades, get a good job and all that other stuff, not that there’s anything wrong with getting good grades. I love good grades. I’m a smart kid).
A good example is in-school sports competitions like dodgeball (one group against the other). Dodgeball is the only in-school competition I actually stand a chance of doing a good job in but I choose not to participate. During those competitions, I usually find myself doing homework and watching little of the 30min competitions. I always do homework when I can and remain sucked into it until I am done. I see most sports and sport-related conversations as a waste of time (although I play tennis). I find it difficult lightening up around my classmates sometimes (part of the reason is because I am a foreigner and still getting used to the US and its people and culture) although some say I have begun to lighten up more. I am also an introvert. My peers sometimes look at me like I’m some sort of an adult and all keep quiet the moment I start to talk.
So for those of you who are good at it and/or naturally carefree, this is a question for you (anyone else who would like to answer is welcome too). In a nutshell, I would like to learn how to lighten up and get involved more. I don’t want to regret high school, much like I ended up regretting middle school. Thanks a lot. =)
