What are the Pros/Cons of having a blog?

I have been thinking about opening and starting a blog through some site like Tumblr, but am unsure of whether or not this will just be another distraction.

Does it truly help to be ranting into cyberspace even if no one is listening? What is the beauty of sharing your hopes and woes if no one cares to click? I don’t think I could pour my heart out to people and then say, “Hey! Read my blog!”.

I realized this question is very open, but any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

To be honest, I’ve always wondered the same thing. I suppose it probably has the same benefits as writing in a journal might have. Other than that, I fail to see what one stands to gain by creating a blog. It shall be interesting to see how others respond.

I have always kept a record of things that I write, but never journal-like. Just collections of poem and mini-stories. While it would be nice to share those with people, I always seem to see terrible responses to stories, poems, blogs, rants. People being cruel. Does this happen as often as it seems?

Yea, I think so. People seem to be quite harsh when it comes to another’s creativity

The biggest advantage I know of is that since blogs are web based, if something ever happens to your computer, your writing is safe and not lost.

I agree! That’s the part I like most! Thanks so much for sharing this with me, I like the premise better than anything else I have read. :]

Well, most blog sites, including tumblr, give you the option to have it private. So, if you don’t want to bother with worrying about readers and such, there’s always that option. Having a journal-like thing online is just a great convenience; you never lose your writing or art, if it’s public you can get critique, and it’s just always been easier for me to manage.

There aren’t really any inherent cons, though there could be with a public blog. There’s always the anonymous trolls and such to worry about, but that’s about it.

Thanks very much for your opinion, I came up with a great idea at work yesterday:

A blog about working in a coffee shop. It will be anonymous, and enough of me that I wont feel violated by bad comments or such. Hopefully to the people that actually read it, it will provide insight into food service worker’s lives, and how we view our work. It will be: Funny, Interesting, and at times, probably quite ridiculous…But I figured it will be a nice outlet! I’ll post a link to it in a new post when I get it up and running. I’m looking at sponsor sites now.

Pros: you have a public and easily accessible means of expressing yourself for people to read.

Cons: you have a public and easily accessible means of expressing yourself for people to read.

Very true!
