university help: I need help writing a CV - Help.com

I need help writing a CV

So im currently at university and there is this scholarship that i reckon i could get. However it requires that i write up a CV. Here’s a little part of what they’re looking for:

“Applicants must complete an online application form addressing their personal qualities, leadership potential,
extracurricular activities and community involvement, and attach a CV by the scholarship closing date.”

So ive never written a CV before. Sure i could google how to write a CV, but i dont think i would get much more than just a blueprint of whats supposed to be on it. I need advice on how to write a GOOD cv. So should i fake anything to make myself look better? How should i word things to make me stand out from the rest?

Just any advice or opinions would be really helpful - and the things due in 4 days!

I wouldn’t lie, in case you get asked about anything that’s written on there. Start with your name and address, then your personal profile. Use this to describe yourself - things like able to work well in a team as well as alone, having initiative. Try to tailor it to what you’re applying for. For example, when I applied for a care home job, I mentioned that I’m caring and enjoy helping people, but I wouldn’t necessarily include that when applying for an office or factory job. Then include any jobs you have held, and a history of your education back to GCSEs, including any training you have had. Most places I did CV writing also advise adding a hobbies and intests paragraph, then who to contact for references. My mum always told me to make sure my CV’s no longer than two pages.

Hmmm so what if i dont really have initiative, or i tend not to work too well in a team? Like i CAN work well if its with people i know, but with strangers i feel a little uncomfortable…

I think that’s where people tend to elaborate… It’s like you’re selling yourself, you have to put yourself in the best light possible so you’ll be the one to get the job. In all honesty, I wasn’t confident working with other people either, but once you are put in a position where you have to, it comes pretty quickly. And initiative is mostly just common sense, so I’m sure you have it :)

a CV is just like an extended resume. you have a section on your education, in which you list any colleges you’ve been too, your GPAs, studying abroad programs, or special programs you’ve been in.

if you have any independent study, list that as well.

list any honors, awards, fellowships, scholarships.

have a section for extracurricular/volunteer experience and list duties involved.

finally list your employment history with listed duties.

my last section included certification i have.

here’s a list of words to include on your CV: http://www.aie.org/Finding-a-career/W…
try to avoid passive phrasing.

ah and so with that comes the main problem for me.

Ive been to 1 university - the one im currently at. Ive only completed 1 year so far. Ive never been in any sort of special program at all and im not involved in anything at uni.

No honors, award, fellowships - nothing.

No extracurricular/volunteer work prior.

No previous employment experience.

I pretty much have nothing i can write about what ive done, cause ive done nothing -_-

You need to make the experience you do have sound as good as possible. Include everything you got from high school. Did you do any extra curriculum classes there? Ever done a paper round or anything like that? I know women who haven’t had a job for 15 years because they were bringing up their children, so they put that down along with what it taught them.

hmm, that is a problem. you seriously have done absolutely nothing? no sports, community service, choir, baby-sitting? never been on an honor roll? no recognition for PSAT/SAT scores? never been in any clubs or any sort of organization at all? including high school? never entered into any competitions? think of anything that required an active role on your part that could distinguish you from every other student applying out there.

Make sure to include them. Is there anything informal you’ve done, such as looking after someone or babysitting? Or helpibg someone decorate? Anything that built your skills up or gave you experience in something.

Ok so ive just started writing this thing, but ive got a question. Im writing down all my academic achievements, but should i also put a photocopy of the original documents to prove that i really did get that result? Cause if i decide to do so, i think it might take up too much space - like 3 pages or more.

You can take copies with you just in case, but they don’t need to be included in your CV.

no, don’t include proof of anything. they’ll trust you with the understanding that if any untruths are revealed, you’re screwed. just be honest, and you’ll have no problem.

for future scholarships and such, you might want to invest in a job or some kind of community or volunteer experience. grades will only get you so far.
