What alternatives to talk therapy are there if you’re really stressed?

My parents really want me to go see a counsellor, but I don’t. All the ones I’ve had have only made things worse. I do agree that I need to do something, though, and I think they’ll make me go to a therapist if I don’t suggest anything else.
Suggestions, please?

Hello there,
it depends how stressed you are, what is causing you to be stressed and whether there’s anxiety there too. Those are actually two different things.
I just posted some relaxation strategies on my blog. Check it out if you’d like.

You could take up mediation or yoga and start writing a diary of all your thoughts down.
Exercise or meditation can get rid of pent up energy and help you learn to be in the moment more. You’ll find yourself feeling more relaxed.
Writing a diary as well will we a good productive way to sort out your thoughts :)

There are a lot of benefits to talk therapy as well though. Can I ask why don’t you want to go? And why are your parents pushing you to?

It depends very much on what kind of “stress” you are.

But a good alternative to an individual talk therapy could be a group therapy where you’re together with a handful people of the same age group who have similar problems (but not really heavy psychiatric diseases) — guided by a therapist.

Have a look at this: “Group psychotherapy”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_ps…

I’m really stressed out about school, and about food. It’s silly to worry so much about food, but I freak out whenever I gain or lose a pound. It makes me feel like it’s going to keep going.

Hi crystalsandsand,
I don’t want to go because they’ll just tell my parents everything I say, and because they make me feel bad about myself. My parents want me to start chatting with my dad again, which I never do because my parents are sort of mean!

Exercise is a really good way to relieve the stress. And if you are worrying about gaining a pound or two, regular exercise will ensure that you keep control over that. Read the replies on your post so far. You have gotten A LOT of good and effective suggestions. Take each one into consideration and try them out… seriously. See how they work for you. Test them on yourself.

You will realize that perhaps, just changing one little thing in your daily habits, will have a huge impact on the way you feel. And when you do, you’ll also realize that you, indeed, have a lot more control over your own life and circumstances than you might think you do.

It has been my own experience that we mostly stress over things when we “feel” we can’t do anything about them. What makes the stress go away, in most cases, is actually doing something about what we are very often, “needlessly”, worrying over.

I agree with crystal’s recommendations. good stuff. but it may not be enough.

and no, therapists (at least in America) are subject to a confidentiality agreement. they can’t rat on you unless you’re going to kill someone or commit a serious crime or something. think about it. if people were afraid to be honest with their therapist, what good would they be able to accomplish?

how exactly do therapists make you feel bad?

I know that they aren’t technically allowed to tell my parents, but they did once so now I don’t trust them at all. :(

If you’re under eighteen depending on the agreement with the therapist they might talk to the parents if the therapist gets the impression you’re in danger.

You could say you’ll only go if the therapist agrees not to do that.

Thanks, okei!. My parents still want me to go see a therapist… And things have gotten both better and worse, depending on which area of my life I refer to.
Friends– incidentally, I just called one of my old ones to see if we could get together this summer. That’s a good suggestion. The other ones are good, too. How about I try each of these at least once in the next couple of months?
See you later!
