future career help…

So my dad is a professional photographer and my mom and i are extremely good at making cakes. since dad normally phtographs weddings or other big events me an mom decided that maybe we should start to make wedding cakes or cakes for other big events. i told her i wanted to become a nurse but she knows i really like to cook/bake. i dont get much chances to practice but im going to start making more time for it since summer is starting. despite the higher income of nurses or really anything in the medical field, she keeps telling me i should go to culinary school even if its expensive or far away. but i think she only says that becasue i keep talking about it. i really enjoy cooking/baking but isnt it silly for me to deciede to do that as a career?? i mean in my mind its not. but i think other people might think it is. and i hadly know anything about choosing a career so id like you guys to help me on this one. to me, it makes sense beacuse i can actually practice cooking/baking constantly and where ever pretty much and since i already know i like it and have expirrience doing it it just seems like the best decision. and also because of the mom and dad fortunate sittuation. i could start voulenteeering at hospitals and i might like it but i have to be 18 and im not 18 yet. whats the best choice? im also good at writing (but since i wrote this really fast its crap so don’t judge! :)P )and id much rather pursue a B.A (bachelors in art) than a B.S (bachelors in science). everyone keeps talking about tremendous amounts of college debt and a crappy economy soo..? i want to be able to travel and live in a nice city and help people feel good everyday. a lot to ask for it seems since im so unqualified. the only people that make money are the engineers and the people in the medical field. but my friend (who’s parents where always super strict on grades) went to the best university for choir in the world and her parents supported her (surprisingly) and they’re proud of her. i mean she’s super smart, she could have done ANYTHING… :/

Being a nurse is an excellent choice if you really love it. A friend of mine is a nurse, and she said within the first semester, people can usually tell if they’d be good at it or not. It does require a lot of cleaning poop, dealing with human waste and obviously blood and handling very difficult and sometimes uncomfortable situations with aplomb and grace. You also have to consider the hours - 12 hour shifts, 4 days in a row, then 5 days off, and then start again. There are perks to this lifestyle, but it might make it hard to have a stable home life. but you can pretty much live anywhere and be a nurse, and its always in demand. So like i said, its a smart choice. Definitely the easier route of the two.

There would be a lot more creativity, and independence becoming a baker/chef. I would prefer to specialize in baking personally, because working in a kitchen is hectic and again, the hours are long and dont promote a stable home life. With baking, you could start your own businesses, in which case I would highly recommend becoming an organic, allergen free baker. If you start now, and experiment now, you could be really good at it by the time you go to school, which will make you even better. The organic/allergen free market is BOOMING and shows no signs of slowing down.

this route will be more competitive, challenging, and a lot less predictable. Depends what kind of person you are. Can you see yourself being a nurse, working an a hospital or clinical setting for the rest of your days? There is security in this job.

Where as with baking, its less secure but you might heed a lot more enjoyment and fulfillment out of it, and you can make it a successful career, if you go after it. It wont come to you, you have to make it happen.

It really alllll depends on the type of person you are, how much you are willing to put into your career and what kind of job you would enjoy day in and day out.

I’m kinda in the same shoe as you are, or maybe I’m not anymore. I’m not sure. I’m the kind who doesn’t like getting stuck doing the same thing over and over again in life. I want diversity and variation. Perhaps that’s why I’m pursuing a research career.

I believe we’ve gotta do what you love in life, make the best out of the short time we have. (Of course I don’t mean hurting people or crime or anything like that)

Passion goes further then smart everyday of the week. If you have a passion to bake, then bake. Being smart about it will go a long way in growing your business ideas. I see no reason why you can’t be a smart baker. :)

Here is an idea:

Make wedding cakes with photos printed on them

The printers to print on eatable “stuff” are not that expensive anymore.

Then you get the best of all worlds.

You can be a nutritionist who heals people through culinary wisdom and artistry. A lot of food service is like that anyway, identifying peoples life needs and trying to help meet them, through the particular medicine of food, drink, ambience, etc.

If you want to go into the culinary field, then don’t let that stop you! If it’s what you really want to do, then I’m sure you’ll find a way to make it work. It’s also wonderful that your parents are there to support you. I say go for it, but you should still probably keep your option open.

I’d say an RN license would be a good idea. Go for the 2-year program so you can start working quickly. Do your baking on the side. Then… after a few years it will be very clear to you how much success you can expect in baking for a living and whether you enjoy it more than being an RN. If you love baking still and can see that the prospects are good for a successful business, go for it! If you find you don’t enjoy it so much as a full-time business or find that it cannot support you financially, then use tuition reimbursement from your RN job to finish the 4-year nursing program.

I’d say if you’ve got another year before you can apply, then why not wait? Also there is nothing wrong with making cakes for the rest of your life. People pursuit their passions, not the passions of others. So wait till you’re the age at which you need to apply and make your decision then, but do what makes you happy, otherwise you won’t be, and trust me you’d rather be dead than doing something you hate.
