Is it better to go to college in your home country?

I wanted to get away from my tiny home town so I applied for college in another country, got in and moved over. But I’m not really happy here.
I was talking to a friend who had also moved from another country and she has decided she doesnt like her course either and instead wants to move back home. She says its because she hates that she no longer belongs there when she goes back to see her parents and that if she goes to college there she will make her friends there and probably her life there.
Do you think that makes sense?
I have been thinking how I miss my home country so much, even though the opportunities here are really interesting. I really don’t like the idea of going home and not really having people to visit. And I could always move away to another country again when I graduate.
Then what if I ever want to move back. I won’t belong anymore.
What do you think?

Might be cheaper to go to school domestically.

I think any opportunity to meet new people/cultures is time well spent. Home is a place to miss but should never stop you from your next adventure!

I get that as an ant in a giant world you want to be heard, but then again sometimes it is nice to sit back and listen. ;)

You’re just home sick.

Being at school creates a lot of anxiety. It’s natural to look for some simple reason to blame that anxiety…. like being away from your home country. But you will be far better off in the long run to learn how to confront your anxiety directly and deal with it: joining social groups, reaching out to people around you to get to know them and seek advice… looking for ways to make a situation work for you instead of running away from it.

I think it all depends on what kind of person you are. If you are one who enjoys seeing other places and can adapt to an unfamiliar environment, I think going to school abroad will be a tremendously wonderful experience for you. On the other hand, if you are one who finds it hard to adapt to an unfamiliar environment and would prefer not to venture into other parts of the world, then you might be better off staying where you feel at home.

Well see I thought I was the first kind of person. But now I’m not so sure!

Perhaps you just need to give yourself more time to adapt. I think it will begin to grow on you after a while. Think of it as your new home away from home. :)
