boyfriend help: Now I live in a one bed flat,I’m a carer and am hoping to become a nurse. - Help.com

Now I live in a one bed flat,I’m a carer and am hoping to become a nurse.

And I don’t know what to do in the mean time while i wait to go to uni.

I don’t know if I should try and get a car or a bike. I think I’ll find it hard to upkeep a car but without transport I have a feeling that it will become difficult to get to uni and back. and I don’t want to live in uni because I don’t want the worries of becoming homeless when I come out. I need to keep my home to feel secure.I thought it would be a great idea getting a bike but I’m unsure now after thinking about it because of the nutters on the road. And a car would be better for the weather in this country, more safe as the roads get slippy and cross winds ect. but if I do work hard and get a car, its gonna cost a fortune, especially in petrol as it keeps going up. a bike would be cheaper to upkeep and pay for petrol.

I also want to move out of this flat, it is far too small and I want company I don’t want to live on my own. So me and my boyfriend have been looking for a house.

I don’t know what to save up for and do this year. I also hate my eyes because I have to wear glasses but they’re always dirty, falling down my nose, crooked and they really do my nut in. So I’ve been thinking about getting laser eye surgery but that costs a bomb.£2300 - £3300 for both eyes. I mean you can get it done cheaper but they don’t always do it right.they can make it worse and then you would have to pay the higher price to get it done properlly anyway. oh and I’ve already tried contacts-can’t wear them.

And Id really like a rabbit. It sounds so stupid but I’ve always wanted one and it would be something I could enjoy spending time with when I’m on my own, when I finish work or on my days off.I could go and get one now if I wanted to but I don’t know if its a great idea if I go to uni.

What should I do? What should I save for? cos I need to be aiming for something and I really dont know what to do.
car/bike/bus fairs?
Things for a house? eg.carpets
laser eye surgery

It will only be me saving for a house at the moment, he won’t be cos he doesn’t have a big income.

I would say that you should save up for a transpo first because that would be the one ypu’d need the most. Then, if you really want then get the laser treatment. And If I were you, I’d probably just be patient with your flat because most people I know save up for houses when they’re around 30’s or they’re ready to start a family. Unless you’re willing to sacrifice your career at a really early point in time, I suggest you should skip the house.

You seem to have trouble setting priorities and focusing.

Your anxiety about starting university is causing you to think of all sorts of crazy things. Personally, I think you should think about your longterm success…. that means creating a lifestyle that is going to work with university without a lot of added stress:

- why add a pet into your stress? pets need care, food, vet visits
- why add a car/gas/parking/driving to your stress?
- why add the debts of luxury eye surgery to your stress?

Find a cheap home on public transit that will get you quickly to university.

Recognize your anxiety and stop letting it push your brain into a 100 different directions. When we are anxious we look for things to make us feel happy… and we end up making all sorts of silly choices.

thanks they won’t get me very far though. I don’t mind saving and paying for a proper bike and I think financially I’d be able to afford a bike. but to drive monday to friday for 3 years with a car I think it would be hard

I wouldnt be buying a house, just renting. and the price of renting a house isn’t that much more than renting my flat. unless you go private. morgaging may come later depending on wages. but now it’s out of the question.

I feel that if I got a cheap home closer to uni I’d still be on my own and I would find it hard to get back to the area I’m living now. but I find it hard making friends in a new area too so I kind of want to stay in the same area so i keep some pleasures outside of study. If I moved away I would be isolating myself

How bout a scooter? thats what we call them here…this is what I mean:
http://www.rarotongarentals.co.****/P…

They are VERY economical, my friend has one and it costs her $8 to fill, and that does 100km. exchanged thats about 4pounds per 60 miles. They’re also cheaper to buy than a car here. You can park em at a bike stand here too, not sure about your bylaws though.

I know they look a bit naff but you can get sweet retro ones by vespa which look awesome. and they have storage space under the seat.

might be the way to go for you.

I am happy your life is coming together so beautifully and that you and your boyfriend are looking for a house together. If I remember correct, he has a car, right? So I think you should just get a scooter/electric bike for now, it will cost less and it does not take much gas.

As for the laser eye surgery, I know it would be nice to have it done, but I think of it as a luxury item, not a nessecity. So it needs to be far at the bottom of you list. For now, maybe save for new glasses that will not be crooked and get a new style that will look great on a nurse : ) I am in need of new glasses too. I have not had new ones in about 7yrs. now all my kids wear glasses and it is costing a lot because they break theirs all the time. They end up with new ones and there is never enough left for me to get new ones.

I love animals and think having a rabbit would be nice. Once you are in the house and settled in, then I think you should get one. I know you have wanted one as long as I have known you.

The golden rule is to always live with in your means. I should know because I am useless at it! The things that I desire, when I get them and then realize I should have made a different choice, frequently feel like a millstone round my neck.

I was listening to a cd recently and the guy said ‘our posessions end up posessing us’

In particular I am thinking about a sporty car I bought just before I set up my own business. I paid for it with a loan and it all seemed affordable at the time. I was advised at the time (by my mother!) to buy a van, not a car. How right she was, it would have been a tax write off and far more usefull at reducing my delivery costs. I wanted it though and I got it. It was easy to find the justification to suit my desire, it was a big learning curve for me. There were times though when my company was struggling that I deeply resented the payments I had to make on it. That said after I paid off the loan I went and bought a faster one which I didnt need but could afford a little more, I now drive a 4×4 which is great for work and the snow, it is very very practical for me as I have a fammily now so it serves both purposes.

So my advice to you is get a bike, they are cheap which will give you flexibility if your situation changes. Yes other road users are nutters and bikes are more dangerous but it is worth the risk I feel. (I assume you are talking scooter here) and there are courses you can do so you are as safe as you can be on them! I would say if you get one that goes at least 50 mph people are less likely to do nutty over taking procedures. Also high vis equipment really does make you safer. Just never ever take it out when it is freezing.

I will tell you something, my 4×4 is a pig to drive. I have never been happier in any car though because it is what I needed, not what I wanted!

I would go cheap with the eyes for now. Lazer eye surgery is something you can save for rather than borrow for. The art of ‘making do’ is something aged 42 I am really comming to terms with! So I give this advice having fallen for every temptation I could get on credit! The ability to recognize need over desire is one that has taken me a while to learn.

Life is also for enjoying as well so you have to consider things like getting a rabbit cost money and will it be worth the extra money to you? I have two dogs and I would rather have them than the thousands of pounds they have now cost me in insurance, specialist food (one has an allergy, can you bloody believe it!) and medical stuff that falls outside the insurance threshold.

Good luck with it all, consider the long term aims and things will be easier to figure out I think. Stop stressing as others have said, make a decision and realize it is all about the learning, even if the decision we make is the totally wrong one, it will make it easier to make the right one next time!!! unless you are me!!

I was actually thinking of a motor bike.we call the other kind scooters or mopeds. But i’d need a bike to get the right speed for the motorway.

Maybe I will ditch the laser eye surgery for now. I actually cant remember how many days a week it would be.I think it would be 5, afew for practical along side a nurse and afew for theory.I know its for 3 years if u do it fulltime.

I’m unsure about the house, but with the idiots around here where they may play music till 2 in the morning, laugh n joke on.these walls are paper thin and I worry about not getting much sleep and having to work still.but to be honest me and Daniel have been niggleing at each other recently.I want to have a bigger place n company but he annoys me sometimes too.so maybe I should stay put till 100% positive

Hehe unless ur me lol see I’m used to doing everything so logical, safe and sensible.I suppose I’m not sure what is safe and sensible.I really wanted a bike like but I would be travelling on motorways n traveling a fair distance most mornings.but atleast I would be more independent.if anything did happen between me and Dan I could still do my shopping n would be more likely to afford it.

I think playing it safe gets so boring sometimes though. Reminds me how I got my tattoo.totally don’t regret it

I think you sound as if you’re considering way too many choices at the same time. A car, a bike, the cost of each, a house, live at uni, homelessness, living alone, nutters on the road, crosswinds…. wow.. I mean WOW!!!

Prioritize here… What are the most important things? School and follow your dreams is most important. The other things will come by themselves when you finish school because you’ll not only be doing what you ere trained for, (and longed for), but your income will increase substantially. DO NOT GO INTO DEBT!! Finalize your plans to achieve your goal first, the rest will happen easily
