Find help: I have been sleep deprived a lot lately. - Help.com

I have been sleep deprived a lot lately.

I have found that when I am sleep deprived I get very depressed. While I have not actually made a plan for suicide or anything like that I find that my thoughts tend to dwell on suicide pretty frequently when so tired. Is this typical of chronic sleep deprivation or is there a larger problem? (These sort of thoughts don’t happen when I am well rested)

Call the HelpBot phone number 1-800-273-8255. If you are not able to call them, then talk to a person that you trust such as an adult, minister, teacher, friend. Keep trying until you find someone who can help. I thought about suicide as a teenager. I talked to my closest friend and to my minister. They were very helpful and supportive. I started volunteering and helping others in my community. When you help others, you feel useful and better about yourself. I look forward to doing something each day. I’m glad that I talked to someone.

For sleep problems, see a doctor. Worry, bright lights, noise, televisions and computers stimulate our brain to stay awake. Try an eye mask and/or ear plugs, relax and think good thoughts and go to sleep early at the same time each day. Ask the doctor about Melatonin which is not addictive and has minor side effects. You cah buy Melatonin without a prescription at drug stores and grocery stores.

I think that may be affecting me too. Sleep deprivation can make you more depressed, but you should try to see a psychiatrist or something. You should google sleep deprivation, it’s really quite interesting.
Please don’t ever act on the thoughts, you will feel better sometime, things will get better. If you ever feel hopeless, just think, “Tomorrow might be a wonderful day,” or something along those lines. Even if a tomorrow is going to involve something bad, you should remember that life is unpredictable, anything can happen, something great might change your life tomorrow.

Haha I needed that advice too, even though I don’t think I’ll ever kill myself, that helps make me more optimistic. I should sleep though, but I can’t.

Try to get some sleep, and try — I just ate some chocolate and I feel a lot more positive and happy, hahah eat more or your favorite foods or desserts.
Try to see some sort of doctor. Calling 1-800-273-TALK can be really helpful too.
I’m gonna go get ready for bed, I hope things get better for you.
