Feel help: Who should I talk to about my depression? - Help.com

Who should I talk to about my depression?

I feel depressed, and have on and off for quite along time. I have finally realised I need to do something about it, but don’t know who to turn to. I would like to talk to family, but I feel that I can’t express myself well, and wouldn’t be able to explain to them properly how I feel, or that I would upset them. Should I talk to my GP (is this just an UK term? It means general practitioner/general doctor)? Would they be able to help me? Or should I go to a counsellor?

How do you find a counsellor? I’ve realised that talking to a friend isn’t really the best way. And you really should take your medicine, why have you stopped?

I think GP would be the best start as they can direct you to someone who is better equipped to help you with this specific problem. Also, i’m guessing they are already familiar with your medical history as well which always helps.

@Zirbel - Cos you used the word, do you know what the difference between a counsellor and a psychotherapist is? Are they different words for the same thing?

Your First port of call should be your GP. I Have been suffering from depression for so Long I can’t remember, but things only started to improve the moment I talked to my doctor, told them how I felt and what it was doing to me.
the process is tough initially, but don’t think that your GP won’t take you seriously, they are there for you so make sure you tell them your concerns and how your feeling fully, this will mean telling them your symptoms.

these site may give you some help to understand your condition:

Take your first step toward a better life and see your GP
