I’m a college graduate having a hard time finding a job, that is going to support me.

I am trying to get into advertising but there is no internships for college grads, that I found. I sent my resume and portfolio to companies and never hear from them.

I’m a creative person, so I do not want to end up having a job that is not creative. I’m trying to get into marketing or anything that is going to help me in the long run.

As of now I’m applying to many places and one of them unfortunately is retail. Trying to find a decent retail store to work in so I can get paid well to at least pay my bills, while staying at home.

Does anyone have advice for someone who wants to be in advertising and/or in a creative writing field?

A good start could be with an internship on the summer internship program of The Advertising Club of New York.
There you can make also good contacts.

Are you contacting people after sending resume’s and such? If you just send it in and hope that they just call you then your doing it entirely wrong.

I agree with Doc Jackson, you really have to suit up and be prepared to give a full professional presentation/impression. Bring the resume in-person (after having it reviewed by a friend in a professional position and printed on quality paper) and very politely ask to speak with a Hiring Representative. If they ask you just to drop the resume at the desk, again very politely VERY politely appeal to them stating how important this is to you and how much you would appreciate the opportunity to just hand the resume over in person and shake the Hiring Representatives hand.

I’ve noticed a lot of individuals mistreat or are dismissive of the ‘gate-keepers’ (receptionists/front-desk). This is very often professional suicide. Since front-desk has most likely been directly employed by the Hiring Representatives there is a good chance they have a good personal relationship and will feel free to pass along their evaluation of your attitude. Being rude or abrupt with front-desk can easily get a top-quality resume ‘binned’.

I do not think I have the time nor the money to spend on gas to drive to every place, That I applied to. If there were a few like 4 or 5 then OK but there are way too many places here that can benefit me. I will start calling after a week, to give them time. South Florida is very wide and big. I’m doing my best on applying over and over again in hopes someone will call or something with good news. Its a tough economy out there and with no real world experience it is kind of hard to get a job.

Fair enough. Just remember, the payoff is very often commensurate to the investment :)

Maybe find an area with 3-4 good prospects, hit the city-bus all suited up with a briefcase with your resume materials. Hit the area on foot to complete those 3-4 (and if there are any others in the area you stumble across that tickle your fancy, those too). :)
