word help: Why is Firefox’s spell checker trying to correct the possessive form of certain words that are grammatically correct? - Help.com

Why is Firefox’s spell checker trying to correct the possessive form of certain words that are grammatically correct?

For example, when I type “anyone else’s” it flags the word “else’s.”

Is it simply because the word hasn’t been added to their dictionary?

Yeah, in this case it could be the reason.

For other cases: The spelling of some words in U.K. English and American English is sometimes different.

Okay, thanks.

I went ahead and added the word to the dictionary so it doesn’t henceforth get flagged.

I don’t think ‘anyone else’s’ is grammatically correct, actually. I think it’s fine for informal/spoken English but as far as the actual rules of grammar, I don’t think you’re supposed to do that.

Really? Well, I did question whether it was grammatically correct after it was flagged. I did a little research in order to determine if it was indeed grammatically correct, but I couldn’t find too much.

Upon further investigation, I would have to conclude that “anyone else’s” is grammatically correct. It seems that if “someone else’s” or “anybody else’s” is acceptable, which they seem to be according to dictionary sources, I would have no reason to believe that “anyone else’s” would be an exception. Furthermore, Microsoft Office Word doesn’t flag the use of word “else’s” when it follows the pronoun “anyone.”
