question help: I lost my job as my boss did not like me. - Help.com

I lost my job as my boss did not like me.

I was rejected by him and then 9 months later the director hired me on board. the said boss took offense and made life miserable for me. That apart, we were into selling insurance and the method applied was not appropriate i.e. the customers did not know that they are buying a new policy, they were under the impression that they are paying premiums of existing policies. I was just not going to give into such a manner of selling ethics. I reported the matter to the higher management and as a result I was sacked for being a non-performer. It’s been 1yr and 6months now and I haven’t received any experience letter nor my full and final settlement check. to top it all this boss calls up and says, i’ll ensure you’ll never get a job. And that actually has been the case. I have been applying everywhere and have not found a job yet. My question is, being true to myself and working ethically; is it wrong? If not then why am i suffering for being honest, not just to myself, but to the company and the industry?

Have you told your story to an insurance regulator?

Do as Gimli says . . . and think of this: had you stayed with that company, you would have lost your soul.

Yes, an investigation of that company is needed. And if the former boss is trying to blacklist you with other employers, you have a case against him.

Hi there, you were right in reporting the matter to higher management. The only problem is that it seems that higher management could be unethical too. If the insurance brokerage is using unethical tactics to get new business from the unsuspecting public and are not following general insurance practice in an ethical manner then you need to suck up the courage and make “big waves”.

I think you should consult a lawyer and get some advice first concerning your situation. You are considered a “whistle-blower” which is good thing! Employers like ethics Trust your gut feeling if the lawyer is not interested in assisting you.

Many people would advise against the advice I am going to give you, but only you can make the decision. If all else fails, approach one of the big leading newspapers in your area and speak to an investigative reporter. They will be sure to pick up on the story and suss out what is really going on behind the scenes at this brokerage and follow up with authorities to check whether the insurance brokerage is conducting itself in the right manner. There are also columns in the newspaper that are titled “consumer watch” or consumer watchdogs. They are the reporters who look out for consumers rights.

The insurance brokerage needs a license to operate - if they are undermining the public’s trust their license can be revoked by the town council.

I worked in the insurance industry for 3 years and I watched and learned a lot about the people I worked with. Some of them are real cut-throat characters - so please bear in mind you are not alone in this type of situation.

I wish you the best of luck and remember to keep your head held high you did nothing wrong! Phone up some companies in your area and offer your services free of charge in exchange for a reference. I am sure if you explain the situation to the people you talk to they might offer to take you in. Good luck!
