life help: I’m confused–Please help me with my career choice! - Help.com

I’m confused–Please help me with my career choice!

Please take your time and read it completely :-

Well, I’m 17 and I’m done with my 12th now. I’m really interested in doing Medicine, my dream job is Neurosurgery! I know that I have to study for 14 more years and I’m okay with that! I love the job–diagnosing, operating, talking to the family of the patient…I love everything that comes with the job, including the extremely high pay! But the thing that bothers me the most, is the lifestyle! I want to have a good personal life, I want to spend my time with my friends and family also. And I love to travel, I often want to go on vacations [hopefully with a girl :P ]. I love to watch a lot of movies, TV shows and even go to a few music concerts, and I want to do these a lot. Also, I write, I write stories and one day I hope to write a book, and then several other books (Mainly Fictional novels) and maybe a screenplay too. But that’s just a hobby! I know that I won’t be able to have this lifestyle if I take up medicine. My career interest and my lifestyle doesn’t match! If it’s not Medicine, I’ll choose Computer Science Engineering. I don’t like the course or the job that much, it has relatively less job security, it doesn’t give me high salary too but it gives me the lifestyle that I need, so I’m kinda okay with that! I really don’t know what would make me happy–the job that I love or the lifestyle that I love! Sadly, I can’t have both (If there is a job that gives me both please tell me)! And another issue is that I may not be getting a seat in medical school this year as my performance was not good due to some health reasons. But I’ll be getting a seat in good universities for engineering, this year. Is it worth to wait one year and take up medicine next year?? Is 14 years of hard work worth it in the end?? Which one of these would make me happy and satisfied?? I really am not able to answer them myself! Please help me out!

Thank you all in advance!

P.S.– To some of you, these questions may seem naive, but please don’t say anything mean and hurtful!

Hey i understand where you coming from between i was also confused about choosing between marketing and accounting.I dont know much about science related careers so i cant really help you but one thing ill tell you is that dont do something you dont love! you will have to live with it for the rest of your life, take a gap year and upgrade your marks if you have to,and another thing isnt there any health related career thats not demanding as medicine that you can take?

Thanks for your input Mashenge! :) And no, I’m not that interested in other health related careers, IF it’s not Medicine I prefer Computer Science engineering.

Well Sharath I think you should try to go for what you love to do!!

I mean if you do decided to do a gap year I think there are many things you can do during that time but gap year could be quite depressing if there is nothing to do because I’ve done it!

But personally I think 1 year is a good wait for a prospect of the rest of life but you need to make sure you really keep up with the studying during the gap year though if you were to retake the entrance exam (Im guessing this is why you needed to wait one year?) and this could be hard doing it on your own so you need to careful with this.

I would have engineering as your back up plan if the medical school doesnt work out at least you have tried!!

If you feel unhappy and satisfy in the end you can always change your career!!

Good luck!!! :)

Thanks Mr.Potatohead! But the problem is that what I love to do doesn’t give me the lifestyle I want! It gives me the exact opposite of it! I won’t be able to do the other things I love besides work! At least not as often as an engineer can! I don’t know which one to choose–job that makes me happy or the one that gives me a happy lifestyle!

And yes, my performance in the medical entrance exam was not good enough! So have to be retaking the test next year! But doing this would make people look down upon me,my friends and relatives won’t respect me and won’t behave towards me like they used to before! I can’t stand that! And I’m not sure if it’s worth to do medicine after facing all these!

I am 21 and i just started school this past year so i know somewhat where you are coming from because i am currently between going to school for my dream career or going to school for a different career due to life style changes.
I imagine if you got the career of your dreams, 14 years of school will be well worth it. You just have to realize that regardless of what career you choose, you will create your own life style and adapt to that, the life style is not chosen for you, it just may take some time. You are still young and have your whole life ahead of you, you don’t have to make a decision today, tomorrow, or in a week as to what exactly your going to be. who knows, you could start school and end up changing your major to something you would of never thought of, like i did. Life decisions are always the hardest to make and I’m sure regardless, you will make the right decision in the end, no matter what anyone has to say about it. Its hard to grow up and make these kind of choices on your own, it makes you a stronger person, but it can also be very scary! In college you should be appointed a guidance counselor or an adviser of some sort, talk to them and tell them what is going on, they can help out a lot and point you in the right direction you need to be in. i wish you the best of luck in your studies and hope i helped at least a lil bit! Life decisions can be hard, just dont let it get you down!

Well, it’s true:

At least during the professional education — but not only on Medicine, because the formation and the first career steps on Computer Science Engineering would also be very demanding!
You have to set priorities for the education time.

But I’m wondering about your selection: Medicine OR Computer Science Engineering …
This are VERY different fields, especially on the social side: On Medicine you have to work mainly with and for humans, but on Computer Science Engineering you work primarily with and for electronic machines and devices. The first one is more concrete and true-to-life — the other one is more abstract and in striking contrast, no?

Listen to your gut feeling! On which field would you FEEL better and in good hands? THIS should be your main criterion for your choice!
(And forget this people looking down to you, if you re-do the medical entrance exam! Your self-esteem should bear it!)

My gosh, lifestyle MAY NOT BE your criterion!
(Later anyway, when you’ll be medical professor you will have a nice lifestyle.)

Boost your low self-esteem! You’ll need that anyway during your medical education, because the profs and head physicians can be very harsh sometimes! :-)

Good! I’m glad I could help! I hope the best for you, I know college gives us a lot of choices and sometimes its hard to make those decisions on our own but just keep a good head on your shoulders, dont be afraid to ask questions, don’t take your eyes off your goals, and definitely dont let others humiliate you into choosing your own path for your life! My family isnt real supportive of what I want for my future, they want me to go for medicine, but im more interested in music. They sometimes make me feel dumb or put me down because of what *I* want for *My* life is different than what *they* want for *My life. And they try to choose my life for me and you cant let other people tell you how to live your life and what decisions you have to make. Because it is your life and you have 100% control of it, don’t let others take control! :]

I see!! Actually my friend did the same thing, he’s from south asia, the moment he quit engineering people did treat him differently and his parents were not talking to him, but after 1 year or 2 years I’m not sure he graduated from design school and had a lot of media attention and his relatives were calling his family congratulating him for his success, I’m not telling you what to do here because it’s for you to decide but here it’s an example of someone else’s experience which might inspire you :) personally I probably can’t go through the humiliation neither so I really understand why you’re feeling this way. But I also don’t believe in making life choices on other people’s view and not my own. If they question you you can just tell them your health problem, if they still look down on you then they’re not very nice lol.

I do also agree with Emily and believe you can somehow adapt your life style with your career, if you study medicine I think there are many different jobs you can do in the medical industry? I dont know much about this field so I’m just guessing, wish you good luck though :)

I know its hard to do what YOu really want if you dont have people you care about backing you up 100% .. but you gotta be confident in yourself and make your own decisions because its sad but sometimes people, friends and family wont last a lifetime.. so you gotta ask yourself, “if i do this to please them now, what am i gonna be doing when they are dead or gone.” your not gona be living your life, your gonna be living a life that they chose and now they arent here so its pointless. It is really important that you go for what you want. Not anybody else.. they arent the ones living and feeling what you do through your life and everyday.
In the end, if you go for what you want and succeed you will feel really good about yourself and you will have what you truly want in life. Do you want that or do you want to later look back on your life and be left with wonder, ‘what if i chose what i wanted instead of listening and following their orders’

I dont know much about this field so I’m just guessing, wish you good luck though :)

lol..yeah! But apparently the “not very nice” people are really large in number in today’s world! :/

And yeah I like Emily’s point too, I never thought of it that way! I might as well adapt my lifestyle and still be happy! (I hope this happens!)

Wow! Thanks! It actually helped, now it’s kinda clear, I know what I really wanna do! But I was giving a lot of thought about lifestyle and what others would think!

I think that is exactly what I’m doing–letting others humiliate me into choosing a course! Yeah, I have to stop worrying about what others would think! My family’s not that supportive either, they want me to go for engineering and not try for medical once more next year! They were like– “..don’t waste one year and then waste the rest of your life..”! Because of all these things..the things what they are telling me, I’m feeling like I’ll be considered as a loser if I take up medicine next year! And now my biggest and most ridiculous fear is that no one would love me if I take one year off! And people wouldn’t respect me anymore! Yeah, I know it’s ridiculous but I can’t stop feeling that way!

Exactly! The first line is very true! And WOW, I seriously hadn’t considered all these points at all! I’m very sure about what I want to do now! I just have to figure out a way to get through all the humiliations that I might be facing! Thanks a lot! Your answers are very helpful! And are you a Psychologist who happens to be interested in Music????!

Go with what you love. I’m only fifteen and I write as more than a hobby, even though my parents deny the fact that I’ll survive on it. You have he drive for medicine and neurosurgery? Then go ahead and shoot for mars! The hard work will pay off in the end, and you’ll still find time to go on trips. It may not be as often as youd like, but you’ll still be able to go!

Thanks waterdemonsaker! Yeah, I love medicine and I think I’ll be taking it up next year, even if people humiliate me! And I’ll be happy even if I get relatively lesser vacation time because I’ll love my job! :)

And it’s good that you write too! I love writing stories, it feels good! And I’m pretty sure that people can have a comfortable life by writing, you definitely can survive on it! :)

No, I’m Desi myself. My dad is from India and my mom is from Pakistan.

That’s literally what parents tell their kids-pick one: medical or engineering. Finance if youre just horrible in school.

Okay! Sorry for the misunderstanding! But my parents are not telling me anything like that! This is what I want to do! I love medicine and I’m not taking it due to any external pressure! :) My backup options were Psychology, Neuroscience or Computers! Computers is a better choice! But all these are not as interesting as Medicine for me!

That’s ok-That’s good that you’re not doing anything because of pressure.

I would wait a year if I were you and do medical. Going for engineering or computers when your hearts not really in it seems like such a waste!

As for the daily life of a surgeon-yes it’s insanely busy! It depends on what field you choose within medicine, though. Specialties, you have time to pick.

My cousin is a general physician. He worked his butt off here in the United States and just recently moved to Dubai. Believe me, he is living the GOOD life right now.

My aunt works as a physician specializing in oncology. Wayyy more hours. Still travels, but always has to have her phone handy in case one of her patients calls!

You could choose a specialization a little bit more relaxed if you don’t want to be insanely busy at work your whole life.

it really is hard to sway away from something you’ve wanted for so long and so badly, so well done for at least considering the alternatives; its a brave thing to do

one thing: regret is a major thing to consider. if you choose computer science engineering then you might have to spend the rest of your life wondering WHAT IF the two most awful words in the world!

you seem capable of doing medicine so what is one year in comparison with the whole lifetime you’ll have to live with this decision

you should only do computer science if you’d be happy doing it, if you are, then fine go for it, just make sure you do what you truly want to do!

Hi,

Be a doctor. You said you love everything that goes with it. You’ve answered your own question. As for lifestyle, I know consultants in the UK who work p/t because they are on £2000 per hour! They are able to take holidays, write books, spend time with family etc, because they are at the top of their game. They put the labour in and they have reaped the rewards. Don’t loose out in the future because of the needs you have (you think!) identified in the present. Guaranteed when you are 34, 44, 54, 64, your needs will be much different - how much more so than from when you were 17. You haven’t lost out on college, there is a place for you on the medicine course. Work for it. It will be yours.
It sounds as if you are running scared now because you didn’t get the grades - you will do it the next time. Be patient, it hasn’t escaped you. You’ll succeed. Neurosurgery is your dream job - there, you’ve said it. This is what you want. This is what you need. This is where you want to go to in the future. So do it.
You are living for a future that doesn’t exist - a work life balance that you don’t need to consider at the age of 17. Live in the present and each day show yourself and your parents that you CAN cut the grades and work hard. I gurantee that as you travel down the medicine path you WILL find a work/life balance and it will meet your needs for where you are at, AT THAT TIME. Don’t think about tomorrow, today has enough worries.

It is hard to tell you what’s better,’cause you r the only one that knows that. I love medicine,it makes me happy. It is hard…all the time. U have to give all of u to learn all these things and to become someone, but it’s worth, every second. I’ll never regret that I’m studying medicine. So,maybe that’s the question : What would u regret more?

I would regret if I don’t study medicine! I would definitely regret if I can’t be a surgeon! As I’ve said in my post,I love medicine and everything that comes with it! :)
But I would also regret if I can’t have a happy personal life, if I can’t travel around the world, if I can’t do anything else that I love besides medicine!

As Alatif said–

If I can have both, the job and the lifestyle I love, I’ll be happiest person on earth! But don’t you think the probability of that is less, Alisa?? So I don’t really know what I would regret more! :/

Do People dont understand computer science, it is not about computers, it is about the application of computers. computers can be applied to anything.

So if you want to travel you could use your computer knowledge in marine electronics.

However the answer is computer science, then apply it to neuro surgery, these MRI scanners were not made by medics, they were made by computer scientists.

So you can do both

well…if you do medicine…you’ll have to do all the general medical stuff first and general surgery first before you can get into neuro so you have to be certain that you would enjoy every bit of it!

I’m 48 years old and have never been able to decide who I want to be. I let my skills guide me. Now I’m here again after being here at the age of 18. Still don’t know who I want to be.

My recommendation: keep your nose clean, don’t get into any type of legal trouble AT ALL, so that you can keep your options open. Best of luck.
