Do sleeping pills make you feel high I have insomnia

so I use OTC sleep aids because I found that they work much better than ambien which didnt work at all. I use a generic kind from the family dollar,the only active ingredient is diphenhydramine and when I take them I feel high as ****. I start laughing,crack jokes and I become disoriented. I know that my short term memory is affected by them because I cant keep the same thought for longer than two seconds before I forget what I said.
