school help: This is troubling.. - Help.com

This is troubling..

I do not see a solution, do you?

My friend dropped out of school due to personal reasons and is now eighteen, trying to find out what to do with his life. Instead of choosing to spend his years fooling around, as most people his age would, he says that he would like to make a difference.. the only thing stopping him is that, despite the fact that he is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met, he needs an education. Finishing up his few years of school would only be the least of it.. he would have to go for many more to study laws or politics. He says he is wasting his life, but school would be hell. “emotionally impossible”.. and with what money?

I don’t know what to say about this. It is sad to see someone “fail in life” despite all his effort. I just don’t know how to help. Do you see any other alternatives?

What if he used his intelligence to create a company or product.

Yes, trades are great, especially at that age. And it may be useful for him to wait and mature a bit more before assessing whether or not he wants to further his education.

I went to school and WORKED while I did it so I could afford it. Often, people who need an education and say they can’t do it, it’s not that they can’t so much as they don’t want to put the effort in. A lot of times, truly intelligent people don’t really need to. They just start at an entry level position and work their way up. Some of the most successful people in the world only have a high school education or GED. School is useful to those who plan to pursue academic endeavors. And if that is what is wanted, then school is a necessity. But it is not something that “can’t” be done. It merely requires initiative, motivation, and hard work. I’m not saying it’s easy but it isn’t impossible. If he isn’t willing to work hard for the education, how can he expect himself to work hard to make a difference?
