Understanding politics?

I just don’t get why the poor are typically more liberal and the rich more conservative, when the poor seem like they should be more keen on holding onto their money.
Also 1) why do conservatives cry morality when liberals are usually more generous to charity, more tolerant to gay rights as well as women’s and immigrant rights AND 2) why are most conservatives christian/religious when Darwinian theory thrives on the concept of a ruthless, free-market environment and jesus acted like a socialist?
