It is Memorial Day in the USofA.

Nobody works and we remember and honor all of those soldiers who have given their life to ensure my freedoms. I honor them all and will pray for their souls today.

Many people gave their lives without even joining the military. I think we should also remember those who died in a cowardice act of war known as terrorism….

Thanks to all of the Heros that gave their lives for this country. Also the Hero’s from other countries who have stood for what our country believes in. We are a blessed nation and may we continue to rebuild our economy.

Ralph I laughed when I read “Nobody works.” I think that laziness has really hit this country hard and people who can work, won’t. Then I read it with the rest of your post and was glad to see you were just explaining Memorial Day. Anyhow I wish our government would quit paying people to be unemployed. These people will never go find a job because they make more off the government than if they had a minimum wage job.

The Story of “Taps”

Almost everyone is familiar with the haunting melody of “taps,” but few know the story of its origin. During the Civil War, in July 1862, when the Army of the Potomac was in camp, Brig. Gen. Daniel Butterfield summoned his brigade bugler to his tent. Butterfield, who disliked the colorless “extinguish lights” bugle call then in use, whistled a new tune and ask the bugler to sound it for him. After repeated trials and note changes, the call was finally arranged to suit Gen. Butterfield’s taste and was used for the first time that night. The call soon spread to other units of the Union Army as well as to those of the Confederates. Taps was made an official bugle call after the war. Today, whenever an American is buried with military honors anywhere in the United States, the ceremony concludes with the firing of three volleys of musketry over the grave and the playing of taps, a singularly beautiful tune, melancholy, yet full of peace.

I looked for lyrics and found that there aren’t any official ones, but these are some of the most popular verses I found on a west point website page about Taps. I think they are very touching.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise, For our days,
‘Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
‘Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.

My son in law was in Kuwait, my youngest son’s best friend just came back from Afghanistan and my step daughter’s fiance is a marine who has been in the sand box forever…

Everybody cries about our military presence but we give our young men to die so that you can live in your little box of a world in peace and without disturbance. And it costs us billions.

Oh and by the way Iran just got busted by the United Nations with uranium enriched WAY beyond what is needed for fuel three days ago. Stick your head in the sand and pretend they are not trying to build weapons of mass destruction. They want to kill the Jews worse than Hitler… but it is now politically incorrect to call Muslims terrorists. Gag me with a spoon.

If you can catch it I urge everyone to catch the PBS replay of the National Memorial Day Concert broadcast from our Nations Capital. Actress Selma Blair read a letter written by Brigette Cain to her late husband, Army Private First Class Norman Cain III. It will bring you to your knees, I promise.

everybody knows that the tower airplane thing was home made…

“Home made” or not, people died because of it. Those people are heroes.

Our remembrance day isn’t until in September, but I’m more than willing to give thanks during the American one, too. All soldiers deserve to be remembered and honoured, they put their lives on the line for us every day.

maybe u need to reconsider why those soldiers are fighting in the first place…

is it because of freedom or just greed?

think for like 5 seconds before u answer that…

and i dont get how those ppl are heroes… they were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time…

They chose to be there, that’s why they’re heroes. They chose to go into war zones, to fight for their country and their people. A person who sacrifices their life is a hero. A guy I went to school with was blown up by a land mine. He lost both legs, an arm and part of his face. He didn’t have to go over there, he could have just stayed here doing a normal 9-5 job. He chose to put his life in danger. That’s what makes him a hero.

rtp, would the government spend $1 trillion on a war to pick up so little of the US’s oil supply? 0.6% of iraqi oil is consumed by the US. Iraq would like to sell more to the US being desperate for revenue, but we get oil elsewhere. The math just doesn’t add up. The US could buy the oil for significantly less. Oil has nothing to do with the war in Iraq. By the way, Afghanistan doesn’t have any oil, so I’m not sure why some claim that the war in Afghanistan “was about the American thirst for oil.” This argument that the wars are all about oil makes zero sense in the big scheme of things.

911 was not “homemade” do some research.

I watched your video, and though I think peace and education are noble goals, there are already a lot of people who hate the US, there would be more people out for the blood of our citizens if we put down our weapons and stopped paying attention like you suggest. Iran basically trains its children to say “death to America!” and like Big Daddy just noted, Iran just got busted by the UN for having Uranium enriched way beyond what is needed for fuel.

So you don’t want the US to interfere when countries oppress other countries or their own citizens? Okay, a little harsh that you take a position that would have left Germany to its systematic killing of Jews, blacks, gays, handicapped people, and others, and you take a position that would have you against the action the US took in Iraq to end the sick regime of Saddam Hussein who gassed and tortured his own people, but many people believe the US shouldn’t police the world, so I guess I can at least see what you are getting at. What I really don’t understand is how after being a soldier you are capable of thinking that the world is ready for the good guys to put down their guns. Not only the guns they use to protect others, but like the video said, the guns that they use to protect themselves. I think that’s crazy.

Look, people. It’s perfectly possible to honor the veterans without agreeing with the government’s decision to go to war. Memorial Day is about the men and women who fought and died, not about the politicians.

and ur comments on iran is really funny and ur quite arrogant to think that you deserve to have nuclear arms and other ppl dont… typical tho…

if you believe that usa really moves for civil right you are clearly living on the wrong planet… maybe u need a reality check… or maybe i do :)

my point is that instead of morning them maybe one should see the real reason why they are going to war in the first place… for me the reason that govermnet do so is for money and stuff… thus i dont think we are doing the dead any favor by continuing this stupid wars…

You know, I tried thinking around this and its too complicated and nuanced for simple statements but no one should be killed by another human and i have no problem feeling sadness. I’ll remember the brave military and civilians who helped make it so I did not have to grow up in a country where Nazis would send me up a chimney
