girl help: Drawing Women. - Help.com

Drawing Women.

I am a guy, I love to draw, and I am on the storyline of making a graphic novel. I know what I want my characters to look like, even the women in the story. I know how to draw women sort of. My problem is I get uncomfortable. After the face, and the hair, I just cannot stand to draw anymore than that from a women. Even before they hit that certain age, or anything. I cannot I guess is because I kinda feel like a pervert. any advice?

Da Vinci drew naked women, do you feel he was a pervert?

Do you think these characters want to be drawn? if so, then it is a shame not to.

Are they naked? if not, then where is the pervertedness?

Hope this helps.

Im not sure how to answer “do they want to be drawn”

No they are not naked, it just gives me a tingly feeling, and I’m afraid one of my older siblings will see it and say “Aww, you drew a girl!” –that has happened before.

Also, I am kind of young, but not that young

haha. Art is simply drawing whatever you desire. Creativity, expressing yourself, so on so on.. Why be bothered by the fact that it is the female body? Naked or not, it does not really matter. Art has no limits!

it is something that will change with time for you, i can say that much.

would it be easier to draw a woman facing away or only draw from the shoulders up? perhaps work your way down or around if you get me?

If you think it makes you a pervert then it does, but if you accept that even nudity is art, then your not a pervert but an artist. To draw the naked body is essential for any artist working with the human body.

As a 3d artist (and a guy) I’ve had to stare at naked men in order to get the correct look and shape of a man. It doesn’t have to be private parts your trying to get right, but the shape, muscle flow, and skin weights. Poor structure leads to poor finished pieces.

that tingly feeling is normal.

however, it sounds to me that you’ve been made to feel shame. and that can be a tough thing to get around.

a lot of people out there really have a effed up view of what is natural and so this word “perverted” gets thrown around a lot. based on what you’ve said, you’re not perverted. I would however, try to be conscious of how this shame/perverted feeling arises, because then you will be better able to understand where it comes from.

Okay so I may not be the best candidate to answer this question since I’m only 14 and female, but I read comics a lot and am a very avid drawer. The advice that I have to give you is that as long as you give these women bits of modesty here and there i.e. clothes, than you aren’t a pervert. Remind yourself that it’s not like you’re going to go home and wish that your characters could come to life so that you could, oh I don’t know, fondle them in some way or another. You’re not a “pervert” if you’re drawing these characters to express their story. I think that it’s really nice of you to be thinking about this kind of thing and you sound like a really nice person. I only have one question for you. Is the fact that you feel like a pervert the only reason you don’t want to draw females? If so: There are many people that I know to be huge perverts that like it when I draw explicit pictures. I don’t though, cause that would just be weird and I’d be giving into them. You’re not a pervert, as I said before, if you’re telling the woman’s story in your graphic novel or just drawing them so that they can be drawn. Women and men aren’t very different, and men are pretty much just muscular (unless their skinny and/or fat or just skinny) and flat chested women. That came out wrong. I should just stop right now. Anywaayyyy if not: Why don’t you like to draw women?

no. neither of those things would make you a pervert. there is nothing wrong with being attracted to the naked female body. (even if you yourself are female. )

Draw because that is where your heart is. Later on you can further your natural talent with art lessons. Until then draw because a line isn’t a line until its on the paper.

This basically comes off as younger than 13, which is against website rules. If you don’t want to say I get it, but privacy for an age? Listen your taking everything to the grand scale of out of proportion. No one except you is caring about this. If others see a female body and think “ZOMG HE’s A PERVERT” then clearly they are immature and you just need to ignore them.

obviously someone cares about it and has told the OP that he should care too. being a kid/teen is confusing enough. telling someone that its “all in your head”… you may be right, but its not a very effective strategy for getting it out of their head. you know?
