IQ 79 (by Standford-Binet) is called “borderline intelligence” which is also considered as “borderline mental retardation”.

You can check-it again with the child: http://affiliatetests.funeducation.co…

Mental age is not directly related to IQ, but to developmental milestones. For example, an average IQ child who is developmentally like a three year old has a mental age of 3.

guys for an 11 year old an IQ of 79 shows something is wrong with the child his mental age can’t be 11, normal intelligence is 90+ score on the IQ test .. which defines that his mental age is definitely lower than his real age. I just wanted to check how can i know his mental that is the age according to his IQ which scored 79 as mild mental retardation.

Depends on what age he acts, really. For example, a child who does not yet use the toilet, play with peers, or speak in full sentences might have a “mental age” of two, even if they are actually six. This child may have a low or high IQ. Mental age is based on developmental milestones, not intelligence. You can probably safely assume that a mildly retarded child acts younger than his age, but only knowing the IQ, you can’t assign a number.

First of all: The calculation of the mental age depends on the passed IQ test.
• For the Binet-Simon IQ test the rule is:
As score the test produces a number, and THIS is the mental age.
If the child performed at the level of the average 11 y.o., then the child would be assigned a mental age of 11, regardless of the child’s chronological, means real physical age.
If the mental age is the same as the chronological age, then the child is average; if the mental age is higher, then the child is mentally advanced; if the mental age is lower, then the child is mentally retarded.
• The Stanford-Binet IQ test calculates a bit different; the formula is:
(Mental Age/Chronological Age) * 100 = I.Q.
If the mental age matches the chronological age, then the IQ is 100, which is average; if the mental age is above the chronological age, then the IQ is above 100; if the mental age is below the chronological age, then the IQ is below 100.

In any case you need to know which test is in use, and how it scores!
