How to talk to a stranger?

So there’s this guy in my school. Are classes are near each other but we have no classes together. I think he’s cute and I want to get to know him. But I’m incredibly shy and way to scared to go up to someone and start a conversation. So basically my questions are.

How do I talk to a guy who probably doesn’t even know I exsist?

And

If someone came up to you and started talking to you randomly what would you do?

when you go up to him, why not just ask a random question or for directions?
