relationship help: I have a friend who is married and he wants to name their baby who is due any day now after a past girlfriends name. - Help.com

I have a friend who is married and he wants to name their baby who is due any day now after a past girlfriends name.

I asked him if his wife knows and he said he wasn’t sure he told her about the ex girlfriend or not yet. I think he’s asking for trouble. I know the ex meant a lot to him and they had a fairly long relationship. It wasn’t a mutual break up either. She left him so I’m sure he still has feelings for the ex. I have told him he needs to let his wife know but he says “what’s the big deal?” I am not sure she would agree if she found out later. Its their choice but should I still insist he tell his wife?

I totally agree that it’s very unhelpful to name your daughter after a previous girlfriend.
He should also work through his feelings for this previous girlfriend- what if she turns up next year… or tomorrow? It could easily destroy his marriage.

It’s not your place to insist- you can break your friendship like that. But you can tell him very clearly what you think and feel on this. Pick your place and time to do this to make it less pressurised.

In the first place, I agree with you about what this friend of yours is doing.

Far more importantly, however, you need to be made aware that this issue is none of your business. It’s between the man and his wife. Meddling in that could get yourself badly burned.
