So i’ve been sitting my room doing nothing for about 2 weeks now, I think it may be three.

I’ve just been in this non productive funk and its a really bad idea with course work piling up.

I’m just not sure how to get out of the funk.

If you can’t get anything done in your room, take your work somewhere else. Try the library or a cafe if you don’t think it will be too distracting.
Studying with friends is also a nice option.

Change helps me get out of funks. Could you force yourself to do things you normally wouldn’t or enlist a pushy friend to make you do stuff?

I feel like I just came out of a funk that had me down since December. If you care to talk about anything that’s on your mind, we would be happy to listen. Sometimes just talking about things and knowing that others will quietly listen and not pass any judgment can be quite helpful.

I’m just bored, and alone, and not enjoying what I’m doing. I don’t see much of a future. And I’ve been drinking again. I don’t know whats wrong with me really. I just got off a 3 week course which i rocked on, just everyday studying my *** off. And then I just shut off and went back to cycles of binging ect.

I’m never sure if its a crisis or just an adolescent attempt to enjoy my sad little life.

Does drinking make you happy?

Yes, and at the very least it gets rid of unhappiness and boredom. But if I’m not drinking I have many other ways that aren’t substance related to be addicted to something and waste my time.

I believe you have a bright future, otherwise you wouldn’t be trudging through all of this college coursework to pursue the goal of graduating and attaining the career you desire.

Well I wish I could give you something useful, but all I know is so far I only make progress if my options are limited to sink or swim, and my parents brought me up with an unfairly broad definition of sink.

Oh so did mine, if I don’t get A’s and work everyday all day I’m a failure. Thing is they can’t watch anymore so I just lie.

Do you think we could grow self discipline?

Every year I try. I get better, its like, these cycles. So each year I get more productive, but its never consistent. I still have these weeks where I do nothing and hate my life and eat **** and drink ****. And then I’ll get up and be healthy for a little while and do my work, and then back again. I mean I used to have less productive time in the cycles so thats good I guess.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be “regular”. That is my whole deal now. How do i become regular? Like I don’t get people who get up each day at the same time, who work consistently, excercise consistently, date consistently. whatever. I just do everything in jagged ups and downs. I do try but…

I get bored!

I don’t really understand why I don’t stay productive and healthy. I enjoy being both of those things, I just eventually go back to books and youtube.

I think it is a good sign you are becoming more and more productive, I bet you’ll get all the way there eventually :)
I’m hoping that I’ll figure it out this year. I’ll have to.

I suppose I can sort of relate to both of you. I’m generally most productive in the academic world.

If being “regular” means performing a monotonous routine then I think I’d sooner be irregular. Of course, I’m currently stuck in a monotonous routine which seems to diminish my vitality. Sometimes I feel as if I’m ensnared in an interminable dream from which I cannot wake up. It just feels like I’m not conscious of reality.

I have learned that you have to deviate from the monotonous routine every now and then and inject some newness into your life, otherwise you’re certain to go crazy.

Maybe we need like some random generator of activities and if you get one you have to do it.

That would be interesting. I would gladly participate. Too bad we don’t have anything to generate random activities.

We could. Brainstorm activities then put em all in a hat or something. I like the idea.

Methinks it won’t be fun unless I am unaware of the activities in the hat. Is there any way to erase my memory of which activities I wrote down before I draw one?

“It didn’t matter if you were tired, in a bad mood or a relative had just died - the cows had to be milked.” “I have learned to discipline myself to work whether or not I’m in the mood.” This is qouted from the lady who started Mary Kay cosmetics. I am not into mary kay cosmetics or her business model, but when I read her book, the saying “It’s time to Milk the Cows.” stuck with me and has really helped me.

She grew up on a farm and if the cows were not milked, it could equal disaster for the family. So no matter what it was, even if you were dealthly ill, you had to get yourself out there and milk the cows.

There has been many of day when I pulled myself out of bed and forced myself to get my work done, by remembering that in order to live the life I want, I have to “milk the cows” I have to do what needs to be done, no matter what!

It is enough to modivate me. I can relate it to all areas of my life. Not just work, but getting out and being social. If I want to do more then spend my life moping around, then I need to get up, get out, and “milk that cow”

I recommend cold showers. It is one of the simplest things you can do to make yourself feel alive and reconnect with the present moment. Summer is a great time to start.

For best results, do a bit of exercise beforehand. Start with a typical warm water shower and before you finish, switch it to cold water. See how long you can tolerate it before stepping out. Focus your mind on your breathing. The first time, maybe you’ll only last 5 seconds. Gradually, you’ll be able to tolerate it for longer and longer until you can take an entire shower in cold water.

Do not attempt while drunk.
