Is it wrong to want things?

Today. I felt bad because I was at the mall for an interview and as I was walking around I started wanting a lot of things around me…..then I went home and had to cook for my starving sisters….and I felt really selfish for wanting things for myself….is that wrong?

I doubt you would make your sister starve over getting yourself something. It’s only selfish if that’s the extreme. Wanting stuff just makes me want to work harder so it can be for good.

I hope you get the job so you can buy you and your sister something.

Both feelings are important, since they’re your feelings. It just helps you know how you feel about things. First you felt like you wanted stuff and next you felt selfish for wanting stuff. That doesn’t mean that either feeling is “right” or “wrong”, it’s just how you feel. Like, sometimes you feel sleepy, so you sleep, but other times you feel like awakening, so you try to wake up.

At least that’s how I feel about this post at the moment, I reserve the right to feel differently later.

I had another idea too… sometimes when I get a job I soon get really into buying things, because it helps me understand and value the money I’m earning. And it doesn’t really matter too much if the buying is for myself or someone else, I get the same experience of buying something and feeling what the meaning of money might be even if I’m buying something for someone else. So, if you get a job, and feel like buying stuff, and feel like giving stuff to others, you can do both.

If you get a retail job, it really helps to buy things. Like, as a cashier, if you’re not feeling perfectly comfortable you can go make a few small purchases other places; and for dealing with customers or selling products, it can help to go be a customer and see what products you’d want. At least that’s been my experience.

That’s just more real reasons that could go into wanting to buy stuff that don’t have much to do with selfishness.
