I have a Book Storage Problem

So I just moved into this house about eight months ago and there is literally /no/ storage on the main floor of the house and I have nowhere to put my books. I have one bookcase, upstairs in the house belongs to the iguana for right now and the basement is too damp for book storage. I don’t have a ton of money.

Does anyone have any ideas about some cheapish, nice ways to store books? It’s really making me crazy to have them just stacked in boxes in a corner.

Some bookshelves are really cheap. You find them at yard sales mostly. I don’t know another nice way to store books. Cupboards, if you aren’t using them? A closet?

The cheap bookshelves are all made of particleboard and there aren’t a lot of yard sales around here - believe me, I’ve looked! We only have one closet on the main floor in the bedroom and it’s filled with my boyfriend’s stuff. We barely have any cupboards.

This house is really old and the kitchen was an add-on, a lot of stuff needs to get redone and I just need a temporary book storage solution for the mean time.

you can make a simple rustic book storage unit using some bricks/cheap garden blocks and a couple of planks.

Choose a long wall to set your creation against. Just put two bricks side by side.. then place two more on top at right angles to the first layer..and another two at right angles again to make a simple column. Make two or three columns to support a floorboard/plank. That’s your first shelf. Repeat the layer but don’t go more than two planks high or it could become unstable. No mortar or DIY skills needed.

I’ve also seen this method done using solid old books as the supports! Display your books on the “shelves” and include a plant or some interesting objects here and there to break up the solidity of it visually. Also, take time to arrange your books so that they look neat. Keep similar sizes and shapes together.

Just be sure that your floor is capable of taking the weight of your creation and collection.

If your stairs are wide enough, you can also use the side of the steps as a nice storage feature. Be sure that you are not likely to trip over them in any way.

Oh, I like the bookshelf idea! I’ll have to poke around for some bricks, I’m sure there are some on the property. I have a good spot for a low, long bookcase in the hallway, too, I think.

I’m not too concerned with how things look, I just want them out of boxes. Thank you!

It can look fabulous for very little effort. You can sand and wax the plank or paint it to suit your decor. Red house bricks look really nice, or if you’re stuck with grey, then consider painting them to match.
