My son gets SSI for autism, but the rest of us are healthy and have no other income. We get food stamps. Rice doesn’t have gluten, does it? My daughter seems to be intolerant to wheat, but she’s young so I’m hoping she will grow out of it. Just feed your children fruits and vegetables and meat and rice. (That’s what my daughter eats.) You don’t have to buy the special gluten-free foods. Yes, they are very expensive. What did people who were gluten intolerant do before they were invented?

We have more food stamps than we can use in a month though. I’m not sure what we are doing differently. I always hear complaints about them not being enough, but we can’t use all that we get.

Do you also get WIC? That will help if you have children under 5. Of course the cereal probably won’t be an option, but the rest will help reduce your food stamp spending.

It is hard to not be able to give my daughter a cookie or cracker or toast as a snack, but we are learning what options will work. She likes carrots, tomatoes, and apples, especially, and there is one kind of “Veggie Chips”, which are like potato chips but flavored with spinach and tomato, that she doesn’t have any trouble with. We rarely eat potato chips, but, I mean, come on, we need SOME junk food! It was also hard to not be able to let her have fried chicken at my mom’s house because of the flour breading. At home, I use a rice cereal as breading, which isn’t gluten free but it doesn’t cause her distress in small amounts.

I don’t usually buy organic, though I do buy locally raised and slaughtered meat from a butcher shop. It costs more, but it hasn’t been given a bunch of unnecessary antibiotics and hormones. We don’t eat a lot of meat anyway. Better to have less of higher quality than more of low quality.

feeding kids healthy food is expensive and takes effort. its partly because our food distribution system is run for profit, not health
