night help: It upsets me so much. - Help.com

It upsets me so much.

How unnecessarily territorial we all are. I look at the stars every night and think to myself how silly it is for us to claim a particular section of a planet as belonging to particular group of people.

It exists not to be claimed or owned. A friend of mine once remarked at all the sky, “It belongs to us.” I didn’t understand and said, “It belongs to no one.”

I am disappointed in us, but I have to admit we are beautiful in all of our entirety.
Share your thoughts, please.

Not really, I’m just thinking.
It is nice to hear others’ input.

I think your friend meant that those who have the capacity to appreciate it, own it in a way. You own the beauty that your eyes observe because the things that we understand to be beautiful echo our own personal values.
When one person puts a value on the night sky because it means something to them, is beautiful to them because of certain values that they already have, it could be upsetting that someone who doesn’t truly appreciate it for what it is can see it as well. But I think your friend doesn’t have that problem, he was just remarking upon his own values and flattering you by inclusion, but you seem to have missed that. Or I misunderstand your friend.
I used to get angry that there were beautiful things in the world for people who didn’t understand to violate with their ignorance until I realized that it is impossible for them to do this because they don’t see the beauty in it, they don’t understand because they don’t have the same values. Having eyes doesn’t mean you appreciate a **** thing, having values dictates the importance of the things your eyes might rest upon.
If you saw someone do something kind, and you were moved, that kindness belongs to you. Your response spoke of the value you placed on the kindness. Another might have seen it and felt nothing. Their loss, but the kindness still occurred and lives in those who appreciated it. Beauty belongs to the observer. A relatively long explanation of beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
