mother help: How can people be so sure? - Help.com

How can people be so sure?

I’ve never shown myself to be intelligent. I’ve never made fantastic grades in school, I’ve never applied myself. When I do, I do so privately.

My mother is confident I’m a genius.
My best friend, who is surely the most intelligent person I’ve ever met (and the most arrogant), says he’s absolutely fascinated with my brilliance.
Every teacher I’ve ever had insists on my “exceptional abilities”, despite me always having put little effort into schoolwork.
Even the knowledgeable astrophysicists that I have met with (if anyone remembers that I was considering an internship at NASA) claim to intuitively know I’m “something special”, without me having done a single thing to prove myself worthy.

I don’t understand, really.
What do people see in me?
It saddens me because I deeply feel inadequate in comparison to others’ baseless expectations (assumptions) of me.

I wouldn’t say it’s painful, just hilarious.
My case is a sort of opposite of that. Others think too highly of me when I’ve done nothing to deserve it.

Hm.

I think the attribute that gives people the impression that you’re exceptionally intelligent for your age is your eloquence and your overall knowledge of words and how to use them appropriately and effectively. Then again, I could very well be wrong. However, the manner in which you write seems to be on a whole different level compared to most people your age. I’ve read a few of your posts and I can confidently say that it felt like I was reading something written by a college professor of English. Furthermore, you seem to be a very rational person for your age. It’s not every day you find rational teenagers - at least at your particular age.

Which is the proof for the fact that intelligence has nothing common with self-esteem.
Your brain might work in a brilliant way, nevertheless your self-esteem seems to be very low. Boost it!

Bertrand Russel is right on the money.
