Am I being reasonble?

I don’t know. I want to build a water garden. I’ve wanted one for a long time. But I haven’t even contemplated building one because I’m scared a snake will come live in it. There’s a type of snake called a water mocassin, or cottonmouth, that is indigenous to the area I live in and they are attracted to water. They live in lakes, streams, and ponds. They are poisonous, and all though it’s rare, their bite can be fatal. And they are aggressive. Am I being a big coward, stopping myself from what I want with what if’s and mights, or am I listening to reason and not letting what I want cloud the consequences. Please tell me what you think. I know it seems trivial, but this is just an example of the many problems I face because I am afraid of a lot of things and I seem to miss out on a lot of opportunities because of fear.

Aww. Experience life, don’t be afraid. Sure, a lot of things can happen. A plane could crash on your house, a meteorite could wipe out the earth, nuclear warfare could destroy us all, tsunamis, earthquakes, murderers, car accidents (probably the most likely one of those that I’ve mentioned), heart attacks…
Nobody lives forever and life is often short. Death is a part of reality that most people don’t want to come to grips with, but if you lose your fear of it, there’s very little else to be afraid of in the world. I trust in God, and the thought of death doesn’t bother me.
I hope that you can likewise not be afraid. Whatever else happens, if your only goal is to protect your life, you will not experience or get any value out of it.

And in this case, you really have nothing to fear, I believe =)

Its not my life I’m so worried about it. I’ve been bit by a poisonous snake before and live to tell the tale. It’s my little daughter. I’m afraid of something happening to her…

It’s a similar concept really. She can’t experience life without living either. That doesn’t mean you want to allow unreasonably dangerous risks, but the chances of harm for her in this instance are also low. =)

The majority of cottonmouth bites are not fatal, and most people recover completely after receiving proper medical treatment

Cottonmouths are bold and often will not frighten easily, but if left alone will eventually slither off to hunt for more palatable prey

1.) Be alert after big rainfalls. water tables rise, flood out mole dens, rat dens, etc., These animals will come closer to your property for higher ground, Mocs will follow there scent to feed. So if you have dogs, keep them on a leash after a big rain, don’t let them wander the backyard.

2.) keep your grass, shrubs cut short! preferably, don’t keep shrubs at all. use rocks over mulch for landscaping. mulch allows for more critters to burrow/birth and snakes CAN burrow in mulch as well. If you can use marble chips (about $4/bag at home depot) spring for it. Probably need about 20 or so bags but its worth the peace of mind. Plus, offers a nice backdrop to identify the enemy.

I live in east texas, where water moccasin’s (cottonmouth) are everywhere all the time. They are very, very poisonous, but they most likely aren’t fatal. If you’re not a baby, the worst it’ll do is make you sick an inch away from death and your bite wound will swell so bad, your skin will rip. regardless of my condescension, I think if it really worries you that bad you shouldn’t get one. But if you want one that bad, then you should get one. Or build one, or whatever.
