What is Ethernet in layman’s term?

I need a very simple explanation because I am not a techy person. Need to understand it badly.

Think of it as a simple tool for you and your office mates share files using your computer without your internet. Ethernet is a network within an organization. You can do file and information sharing to your office mates using this simple set-up. This usually done by most businesses to stay connected with the people within the company. Ethernet is a standard for connecting two computers (or other devices) together. It is usually a certain type of cable known as an ethernet cable, connecting through network cards in each computer. Once the link is established and the computers use programs to talk to each other, you have what is called a “network”, connected by ethernet. The internet, which you’re looking at right now, is the “network of networks” — after the two computers are hooked together, they often hook to other ones — and although there are popular alternatives nowadays like wifi to hook to the local network and satellite to hook to the wide area or metropolitan area network, ethernet is still probably the most commonly used standard, physically hooking devices through a certain type of cable. The biggest set of all these networks together is called “the internet”. It was invented by Al Gore sometime in the 90s.
