How often do you buy a new laptop?

I have a laptop that’s 2.5 years old now. The left CTRL and ALT key doesn’t work anymore, the speakers are broken, and the battery can barely hold its charge. The fan can get incredibly loud, to the point that it’s distracting in classrooms and I can’t use it because I don’t want to be a disturbance.

But besides that, the computer itself works perfectly fine. The only major issue I have is that I can’t use it in class. Besides that, everything else is more of a minor inconvenience.

I was wondering if the age, plus the issues I listed above, are enough to justify a new purchase?

When i kill the one i have i need to replace it. I have only bought 2 so i can´t tell you about the intervals for this.

What you have presented above would for me be far from what i need to replace anything. And i mean far away in the direction of that i would not be able to let things get that far.

I had trouble with the battery on the old one, but that was fixed by having it plugged in. One key was a little slow, but i mended it by beating the crap out of it.
The software went haywire and then i beat the thing into total submission. Could not turn it on after that and i placed an order..

If you have the cash, go for it.

That’s really up to you. I have a computer in similar condition and I still use it, because I like to not waste anything. It’s been going for about 4 years now of heavy use, and it’s kinda pathetic by the standards of computers today ^^
But I like it. It’s served me well, and I’ll put up with it as long as it lasts me, I believe.

You can justify any purchase you make, the choice is yours. You could even donate this laptop you have if you’d like.

Laptops are getting pretty d*mn cheap now. Also, a low end el cheapo model today is as powerful, if not more so, than a high end one just a couple of years ago. Hell, even some of those cheap AMD netbooks (C-50/60, E-350, etc.) are. You could stick the old one on Craigslist for a few bux, or just keep it as a backup/loaner. I’d be leery of using it, given the fan noise, because there might be an overheating issue.. might want to blow some canned air through the outflow vent(s) in case there’s a buildup of dust/hair.. unless you’d like to tear the lappy apart and do so.

I had a great laptop. Touchscreen and the screen moves and then it takes the form of a tablet. Well I knew as soon as I got it that it wouldn’t last long. It has lasted me about 3 years now BUT there is a lot of damage to it. I don’t think it was made with strong materials. I guess I don’t really take the best care for things like electronics things but I think getting things with all these extra bits and bobs isn’t a good investment. Next time I think I’ll go for something nice and simple.
If I had the money to get a new laptop I would get one but I have other things to purchase first. It’s better to have a back up just in case that one packs up.
There’s also something that keeps rattling inside of it. I wonder what that is. :(

I generally prefer the business class laptops. I saved a lot of money by buying from a student. Yup, $800 (Dell Latitude E-6320) is pretty pricey, but a milspec lappy (drops, dust, moisture) with a 3yr NBD warranty and accidental damage protection vs. almost $3000 for the same unit new sounds pretty attractive. The CF-19 I had (and sold) survived 3 drops from about 4 ft onto concrete/rock.. and worked fine afterwards. The Dell outlet (USA) has some really good prices on business laptops (refurbs/returns) and they come with a 3 yr international warranty.
