Government help: More work phun.. - Help.com

More work phun..

Okay I posted a rant the other day about a situation I had going at work where a co-worker thought I was backstabbing them. I talked to them and it turns out it was that other co-worker merely stirring the pot.

But I find out my job is more like the government each and every day, lol. Turns out they are trying to thrust me into a position where I could potentially be a backstabber, and to be honest…I dont like it.

See, for those who haven’t been following along, I am trying to become an assistant manager at my job. The manager of my department told me he really wanted me to take the job so I applied. Well folks, aside from a coworker who is also trying to get the job talking trash behind my back to make me look bad, I also had my frist interview for the position on saturday.

Now heres the situation, my boss is out of town dealing with family business, so this upper level manager decides to conduct interviews in his absence. What I would consider a major no no. Then during this interview (which BTW I really didnt end up getting much of a word in edgewise) he told me about how disappointed with the sales in our department, upset about how certain things are being run, etc. etc. etc. Then he gave me an ‘assignment’ to have ready for the second interview (which he told me I was already moving on to as I am already an employee there) was how I would change things and also a 7 day plan for a buffet. But, and heres the kicker, he told me not to tell my dept. head about this little ‘assignment’.

Now is it just me or does it seem a bit fishy he would ask me, in the absence of the dept. head and without his knowledge, to do this assignment?

Frankly I’m at a crossroads as to what to do. Do I go behind my own bosses back and do this assignment…or do I go to my boss when he gets back in town and give him a heads up as to what is going on?

And before any of you see the obvious like I have and say “I think they are trying to groom you to take over the dept”. I DO NOT WANT TO BE THE BOSS!!! I’m a full time student and I have no plans whatsoever in staying in this business past 2013. All I wanted was a little more money in my check and to be able to put a management position on my resume. Nothing more, nothing less. What I’m saying is asst. manager I can handle and do school full time….running the entire department….not so much.

Ummm help??? ;)

See, here’s the problem with that though. The guy who is currently in charge…he is VERY well respected in town. Has been on local TV,etc. He’s one of those guys who’s name is very well known in this industry, meaning a recommendation from him is **** near worth it’s weight in gold. He also told me that if by some chance he did get booted from there (hes the third manager weve had there since opening, big bosses where I work tend to have a short lifespan) that he wanted to take me with him wherever he went next. If I do end up being the backstabber here….I completely and utterly burn that bridge to the ground. See my conundrum?

Well folks…as usual turns out that problem ended up solving itself. The boss got back from his leave today and walked out after fighting with upper level management. Which would leave things wide open for me…at least on the ‘not wanting to backstab good people’ front.

What an interesting week this is going to be,lol.
