i installed ubuntu 12.04 on my computer and i did wipe out the original os, which was windows xp.

the problem is that I FORGOT MY PASSWORD. i was trying to change the password using GRUB, but for some reason the grub does not pop out. I tried deleting the key rings but that does not work either. what else can i do to change my password?

According to this page, there is a backup “recovery” copy of the operating system that you could boot into to change the main password. The first picture is of “grub”, from which you can select bootup options. They have some instructions there on how to get into grub, or there would be more instructions on the ubuntu forums.

i tried doing this, but instead of showing the grub menu, it just sends me to the desktop…i tried nutelius or however you spell it, but it is asking my my password. when i reboot, it just keeps on sending me to the desktop.

is there a way i can uninstall ubuntu 12.04 from my computer and install it again?

Yes, just start with the original CD in the drive. Part of the install process formats the hard drive. The computer’s BIOS has to be set to boot first from CD, or as the computer turns on it may say “Press F12 for boot options”.

Then, there may be other options from the install cd, such as “repair current installation” or “boot to console”.

I would first search Ubuntu forums for the keystroke to make grub pause in the loading process — a bigger reason is because linux is much better if you learn from the online forums. Especially with something like Ubuntu that has a huge online community. My experience with (somewhat more advanced) Linux has often been, “oops, I pressed a key and the whole system is completely destroyed, now what?” And then I go learn from the people who know, and end up with a stronger system and knowledge of how to deal with it. It’s quite different than Windows that way.
