The deer are so cute XD
I think aiming for late elementary into middle would be a good idea.
This is around the time when kids are faced with the problem of acceptance and fitting in. yeah it’s very predominant in high school but that’s not the “children” you are looking t to write for. I’d be happy to read your book :)

would late elementary be too old though? it’s very true that this is often when the issues start, but that’s where my problem on deciding who to aim for starts: if the story is written like a childrens book, they won’t read it, it would be too young for them. My thought was that if they read it at a younger age, they would learn the lesson and keep it with them (sort of as an influence during an important time in development for socializing rather than a direct memory) And that’s sort of where I get confused :P

I’m happy you like the deer! She was the first character i made, and Quentin followed immediately after. They both just flowed really well. Not the third character is giving me trouble because without a name I can’t really get to know him and he’ll end up being an empty shell… I keep thinking up “M” named but they always fail me… :P

Thanks!

Aiden? I like that name
Alex
Mason
Max

lol and as for the age range…then you should aim for about 5-8 or so…just keep the speeds simple and you’re good :)

I think you should spend a week reading everything Dr. Suess wrote. Start with that mindset. I find I write better when I am reading really good literature. Children’s books should be the same.

Since it is going to be a picture book, I suggest you gear it towards 6-8 year olds. They are just learning to read but still like to their parents to read picture books to them. They are in school and starting to experience being around new people and having to learn to be on their own with out their parents.

this is very helpful, thank you! I know a few kids who i used to babysit who’d be that age by now… I might ask them to critique it for me :P I bet that would be an interesting experience!

The verdict is in: The bat’s name in Mason, but a younger sibling may make a guest appearance in other books who’s name will be Mookie.

Quentin might get a little sister, but her name has not been decided.

Awesome drawings.

Start brainstorming plot ideas. Also try to think of personality quirks for each character. Think of your favourite kids books. All the characters have very distinctive personalities, they have to be well defined and somewhat obvious for the sake of the reading age.

Deerlene is precious. I love it. :)

I have passed a many books in the “Aspiring Author” section of barnes and nobles about becoming a childrens book author/illustrator that looked promising enough.
Then again, you could probably find all the same information on google.

Help me with: What does it mean?

I’m starting to write a kid’s story but I need some help with a few things. For one, I have no idea what age group to aim for or how to stay in it. I want the morals to be relevant considering the modern problems people have when growing up (like being accepted and accepting others, etc) but I’m not sure which age group would grasp these concepts most effectively. the second thing I need help with is naming one of the characters. If I ever get this done and published, or if I deem it good enough to give it to kids I know, I plan to illustrate it myself, so here are a few very quick and very rough sketches of the three main characters:

This one is Deerlene with her parents:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l...
This is Quentin with his:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l...
And this last little fellow… I just can’t find a name that fits him! He’s some sort of mousy-bat thing:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l...

So I think that’s about it, any suggestions and tips are welcome! (And I promise, the artwork is WAY better than these sketches, I did these behind the desk at work yesterday so they’re very basic. I have one I’m working on that I will ask for critique on later :) ) Also if anyone knows how to make these photos look like actual photos on this post instead of links, feel free to edit the post so they show up so people don’t have to click everything :) Thanks a bunch!
