Three years ago I had to quit playing ice hockey due to a fractured wrist and then later due to severe and on-going issues with my stomach.

I waws recently discharged from the hospital for pancreatitis and still am dealing with on-going abominal pain. This pain is an everyday thing for me. While having to quit initially
bothered me and even caused an intense amount of depression, I got over it. Well, recently, I’ve noticed that I am starting to feel depressed again and for the same reason (the inability to play hockey with my league friends due to illness).

I called someone from the league today to ask when the next game would be so I could at least attend to watch them play and then even asked them if they’d like to get together to go ice skating sometime. But I still feel the void that was once filled by playing hockey with my friends once a week. Does anyone have any ideas?

P.S.
Please remember that I am unable to play due to on-going health concerns so suggesting that I just go out and play isn’t really an option.

Thanks!

-Freud

President Pink. (Has a nice ring to it don’t ya think?) Depression comes from concentrating too hard and too much on what you can’t do or you can’t have. But there is a whole world of things you CAN do and CAN have.

I want you to draw inspiration from Eric Legrand. He is a defensive tackle with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed just this year.
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nightly-ne…
He will never play football again. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury playing for college ball for Rutgers University. He is in a wheel chair. He can walk on a treadmill with the help of a machine with pumps and wires. He is relentless. He does what he can. He has never felt sorry for himself or ever said “why me?”. That is just not Eric. He is a winner. And he is back with his coach from Rutgers. He is an inspiration to those he meets both inside the locker room and out. You would be wise to take some inspiration from him too. I think you can do no less.

Thanks for the response. However, I don’t ask “why me” either. TO me asking that question is like wishing it on somebody else. However, I do wish I could be able to do the things I was once able to do. I feel like at the age of 27 I should be able to live an active and healthy lifestyle and not have to spend more time hospitals and doctors offices than I do having fun doing the things I enjoy and living the life I want.

I agree with SoCo. There may not be a way to have things back to how they originally were, but you can always adapt to any situation that comes across your path. All that you need is determination. And I’m confident that you can.

Furthermore, I don’t believe Eric is happy all the time just as I am not depressed all the time. Hockey was one of my hobbies and now it is something I cannot do because I am sick. I have been told by many (advisors at school, coaches, etc) that I am one of the most determined people that they have ever known. I am not giving up, I am just feeling down.

You’re bound to be sad at times, that’s just expected of you. The whole point is to NOT stay in your depression, and then as time passes, you’ll get less and less depressed and/or miss it less and less. you can always find another hobby related to Hockey!

I don’t stay depressed. I am actually rarely depressed. This just happens to be one of my down moments.
