I have a friend who needs to have a job within 2 weeks.

He really isn’t what most employers are looking for. He’s in his mid-twenties and has severe memory issues due to being over medicated as a child. He has tattoos on his forearms and neck that are hard to hide in the 105 degree weather here. He’s willing to work and works hard when put to a task, I’ve paid him to do yard work and he does an excellent job, but he forgets where he is and tends to walk off ladders (and once the roof at someone else’s house), so he needs to be supervised a bit.

He’s never been able to pass the driving test to get a license and his high school diploma is a special education one. His only real mental issue it the memory/spacing out one. Although he was raised in a very sheltered backwoods area and tends to make a poor impression on hiring managers because of how he talks. He also has almost no work history. He was a house husband and is now recently divorced.

Is there a job that will hire anybody? He’s willing to do anything as long as it pays at least minimum wage. He’s spent the last few weeks going to staffing agencies, the unemployment office and walked to every business in his area, but has not found a job.

I guess what I’m asking is: What job can someone like this get? So far not even fast food or grocery stores will hire him. He did do day labor for a month, but he only got 2 days worth of worth from it, which isn’t enough.

construction, like heavy lifting. it’s hard this time of year with the heat but they will hire you if you have tattoos and such.

Where would he need to go to apply for a construction job? I’m sure he could handle it. Thanks for the suggestion.

normally there should be a personel office where he can check which ones are available. they should tell you which ones and what qualifications he needs and additional stuff.

sounds likea tough situation. I applaud him for trying so hard, because it sounds like he’d be eligable for some sort of government assistance program.
I think Space Weaver is right, construction sounds like your best bet. Otherwise maybe a landscaping company?

He probably could get disability, but he doesn’t want to do that. I think he’d be great at landscaping, he just needs to get in the door somewhere. I’ll see if I can find some construction or landscaping offices he can apply to. He was my neighbor for a long time, not anymore since the divorce, but he’s such a nice guy I want to help him help himself, if that makes sense?

It makes sense. sounds like he’s had it rough. ifyou can find someone you know.. network a little bit, it’s ussually easier to get a job that way. Resumes by themselves don’t ussually work. They need some follow-up at the very least, but are ten times better with an introduction.

Well, there’s an Americans with Disabilities Act, and if he’s discriminated against on the basis of his disabilities, he’d have a cause for action with the EEOC. But there are undoubtedly many jobs that he shouldn’t have, for his own safety and that of others.

With memory problems, I’d suggest a career in politics . . . but, no . . . just kidding there!

It’s going to be tough. I’ll have to think about this one . . . but ultimately, it will take someone who KNOWS him or a close friend or relative to give him his first break! That’s where networking will come in.

Ask local pastors for help–that’s a first step!
