can anyone tell me the name of this game: It was a turn based tank-like game.

You had an avatar whom you could “dress” and a “tank” which could be a mechanical device or an animal of some sort. You played over the internet only, but had to install the game onto your computer. It was an 8-player game (max).

Eventually the company who made the game had to stop allowing it in the USA for some reason… so, I had to stop playing it… :(

Gunbound? It is the nearest thing I can find to what you describe. There was something about the company hosting the server for North America being shut down way back when, but as far as I can tell the game is still there (link to home page http://gunbound.softnyx.net/)

If that’s not it, can you describe more about it and I’ll see what else I can find. Sounds interesting.
