I don’t know. People shout this at me often enough: “get help”

I guess they are right. You admit you have a problem now speak to a doctor or therapist to lean how to break the bad habits that pull you back into depression.
There s hope for those who try..

Is it a chemical imbalance? Because if not than depression is something you do to yourself. Try studying Buddhism.

Ahh, then this is not your fault and you have done nothing wrong. This is a medical condition that you need to see a doctor about. And you take medication for it just like you would a bladder infection or asthma. Sorry I couldn’t come up with better examples, but you basically have a brain infection (in a more metaphorical sense) and you need to see a doctor about it.

How do you know it?
You would better see a psychiatrist.

If depression is taking over your life, than you need to find the roots of it. What makes you depressed? When did it start? One way to try and fix it is a method called positive reinforcement. This means turning thoughts into positive thoights. For example
Instead of saying ‘this ice-cream is yuck’ try saying ‘this ice-cream isn’t the best, but I am sure there is better. It might sound silly, but it really works. It helped me when I saw my best friend being killed a while ago.

I have been there and i survived so can you! Patience is the best method to apply. You wont become pateint over night just like you most probably wont become a billionaire over night! But one way to become patent is trough meditation! Meditaion is sitting in a room quiet without thinking about anything for an hour each day what this does for you it gives you more self control to find the emptiness with in your mind(peace of mind) if your able to achieve this(by practicing) you’ll control your mind instead of it controlling you! Most people do this trough praying (religion) some do it by exercising without even knowing that they have been meditating, read a book about this I read dr. Wayne dyers wisdom of the ages!

I’ve seen a psychiatrist many times in my life.

It’s helping.

But there are just times when I feel terrible.
like today.

I’ve made so many mistakes in my life.
