What are those little creatures called that live on the beach and every time a wave recedes they can be seen digging back into the sand?

The ones I’m thinking of lived on the beach in Santa Barbara, CA, USA, but I’m sure they exist elsewhere.

I know there’s some other scientific name for them, but their nickname is Sand fleas. Annoying little buggers, aren’t they?

We called them sand crabs when I was a kid (I’d forgotten), and sand fleas were the annoying hopping biting things all over the beach. However, it looks like they are called different things in different locations, such as sand fleas, ghost crabs, mole crabs and sand crabs, per the internet. So everyone is right.
