Money help: My friend still owes me $500 from last year’s fantasy football season since I came in 2nd place. - Help.com

My friend still owes me $500 from last year’s fantasy football season since I came in 2nd place.

Now I know a few months ago he was having financial difficulties due to a house in another state and money owed to him. Now I’ve known this guy for 5 years now and he’s a really good friend. But he just talked to me the other day about this year’s fantasy football season. There was a $200 buy in last year which I’m assuming will be the same as this year. I value the friendship more than money, which is why I’ve never said anything but I’m afraid if he asks for a buy in from me, it’ll get sticky as far as wanting to get the money owed to me. How do I ask without destroying the friendship?

Talk to him, not us. Tell him that there is money still owed to you. You could offer just to take $300 and have the remaining $200 cover your buy in for this years season.

just say you’re sorry but you can’t sponsor his football thing this year; you would if you could. he will be asking you for $, right? or is it that he will have this $200 and from what you see is going to spend it on this football stuff rather than pay you the $500. does he ‘remember’ he owes you at all? are you also planning to join in this football thing? if so and he happens to say he’s going for it, why not comment about you wish you could but you’re falling short, maybe that’ll jog his memory a bit.

I’m with monkichirmo.

This kind of thing kills friendships. I don’t think your friend is in any position to pay. He should give up fantasy football and all other forms of gambling. Don’t throw good money after bad!
