mental instability of using meth:
Crystal meth is also commonly associated with mental instability, including psychosis that can require psychiatric hospitalization. The mental instability caused by crystal meth might be due to its role in increasing specific neurotransmitters as well as to the adulterants used in making it. Crystal meth is often made with chemicals found in hardware stores, and some of the manufacturing processes may produce various neurotoxins that create undesired mental instability symptoms such as agitation, confusion and emotional dysregulation. The mental instability associated with crystal meth can also be attributed to a significant lack of restorative sleep. Meth users often report going days without sleeping, and this can cause major behavioral upsets, including hallucinations, anxiety, fear and anger. In the January 2006 issue of “Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences,” Dr. Hiroshi Ujike and associates found that meth use increased one’s chances of entering a severe psychotic state, enhanced psychotic relapse and prolonged vulnerability to psychotic relapse.

Excessive Weight Loss:
The use of crystal meth is most often associated with rapid weight loss to the point of emaciation. Methamphetamine releases powerful neurotransmitters that induce a state of euphoria and inhibit the chemical processes that initiate hunger and eating. Specifically, meth significantly increases the amount of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the system. The University of Maryland Medical Center website states that when studying the role of neurotransmitters in eating disorders, these very three–serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine–are of particular interest. Additionally, Dr. Joel Elmquist from the Center for Hypothalamic Research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas found that serotonin works to curb appetite and, at the same time, block neurons that stimulate appetite.

Heart Complications:
The use of crystal meth can also have serious negative effects on the heart. Meth increases the heart rate significantly and, at high doses, may cause a heart attack. Persistent increases in heart rate can lead to chronic heart failure. In the February 2007 issue of “The American Journal of Medicine,” Dr. Mevan Wijetunga and associates found that the use of meth increased the rate of developing serious heart problems by 370 percent
