Most lab research jobs require a phd, but some do not. My uncle works in biotech at some really interesting place, and he only has a bachelor’s degree.

Degree in chemistry, maybe a minor in biology and he works at places synthesizing proteins for medicines. Very expensive cure-for-cancer types of medicines. They probably made him study more, but his university degree is just basic science (and I think just chemistry.)

But there are a lot of scientists in my family (i.e. his parents and siblings) — most advertised jobs require a Ph.D.

really ! wow !! do they get well paid ? hehe and did anyone of them study something connected to biology ??
