Feeling help: I am having panic attacks. - Help.com

I am having panic attacks.

I feel as if I am losing control over my body and its functions. It is very difficult to explain, but I get dizzy and have the fear of going crazy or dying. I have to get a drink of water and take a walk in my house to calm down. I am twenty and have a feeling that this just may be a developmental thing with my brain and getting older, as so many things seem to change. Also, I am on medication 20mg of celexa and have drank too much alchol in the past while. Maybe I should stop drinking? Any Advice?

Stopping drinking is a good idea. You don’t want to be mixing alcohol with medication.

As far as the panic attacks are concerned I know how you feel. I too would have mild panic attacks just out of fear of having another panic attack again. The best advice I can give you is to breathe. As soon as you start to feel an attack coming on, turn off anything stimulating (TV, music etc), and take slow deep breathd. Remind yourself that panic attacks are all in your head and that you can overcome them with thinking alone. Water is good. I have managed to control my mind so that panic attacks no longer affect me but it has taken time, patience and dedication.

Mind over matter. You can beat them like I have done and many others have done :)

At 20 years old you should be moving into the prime of your life so I would argue this is not a developmental thing.

Alcohol is comonly used to mask anxiety but if you never look at the under lying causes of your anxiety you will allways reach for a ‘fix’ (medication, drugs, alcohol, relationships, food issues etc…)

A really good place to go where you will find plenty of people with anxiety problems and a programme to help them is alcoholics anonymous. Stoping drinking like you suggested will reveal the dis-ease of your mind and that will need to be treated if you are to live a happy sober life. AA is the place for that. Stoping drinking on its own will not cure your issues, sadly it runs deeper than that, that is what the programme of AA deals with.

Your perception of life will dictate so much of your reality and anxiety related drinking I would describe as ‘a disease of perception’
