Go to System Preferences > Monitors
And choose an other size there, e.g. 800 x 600; try out the other possible sizes.
(But if you make it smaller it will agitate your desktop appearance!)

Decreasing the resolution will INCREASE the size of the type and icons. For users of Windows OS we can change the size of the characters just by holding down the [Ctrl] key and hitting either “+” or “-”. Mac doesn’t have a similar tool?

Of course, the size of the CHARACTERS you can change (on the Finder/Desktop menu), but not the size of the SCREEN!
And I’m sure you cannot change the SCREEN size in Windows just by clicking on the keyboard.
