Doesn’t work that way. Normally, noncommissioned officers stay noncommissioned officers. You don’t automatically jump into the warrant officer or commissioned officer ranks. You have to apply to those programs.

No self-respecting sergeant major would, after taking 20 years to make sergeant major, want to become a second lieutenant–or warrant officer, for that matter! He’s at the top of his game, he’s proud of making the highest rank in the enlisted ranks, and he will undoubtedly retire at that rank.
