Short story help.

I do a lot of writing; mostly poetry though. Lately I’ve been trying to get back into writing and I want to start small with short stories but I’m having a hard time coming up with good ideas. I keep starting something and then I’m like this sounds terrible.

Any of you that write, how do you write stories. Do you just keep writing until something good comes out of it. I know I should just keep writing but it’s hard to come up with a good story line and where to take it.

the best way to start writing is to start writing. don’t over think it. don’t idolize “the first chapter” don’t even focus on the beginning. just…start writing. it will come to you, something will. maybe something random, but just keep writing and you will find some purpose for it and ways to work around it.
do you need any other help? like editing/proof reading/ideas/inspiration?

Ideas is mostly the problem.

I really want to write a sci fi story. I started out the first time a girl on independence day and I was going to take it to an invasion or just a natural earth ending disaster but I felt like maybe that’s a little too overdone.

I think mostly I get stuck on any ideas so I kinda feel like I don’t know, maybe I’m just overthinking it all.

hmm. probably. when I get ideas for stories, they usually come to me at times when I’m not thinking about anything at all. I will randomly get a thread of thought that just…comes out of no where. And then my imagination takes over. Don’t over think it!
Just let it flooooow.
Take a shower and see if some ideas come through that. I always have a clear mind during a shower, for some reason.

I always start by thinking what kind of story i want to write. could be drama, romance, tragedy idk. after that i just get on the characters i give them lives of their own, after they have their own personality i just go crazy and start writing anything that comes into my mind.

get your ideas organized first. and then just go nutz.

I know I need to stop overthinking it I just want to write so bad! I used to just let inspiration strike and grabbed a piece of paper and it just came out. I don’t know if life got in my way or what but I’m not going to let anything get in my way again. I need to just not think and write, yeah?

And I thought I wonder if I start writing down who is in my story and where they live and what’s going on if that’ll help the sentences start? Maybe? I have a hard time gathering thoughts and sticking to them but if that helps me start then I should try!
