Should I ask how much money I make an hour?

I am moving to a new apartment and I have had an amazing full time job for a week. I was an Intern there for a long while, and they normally don’t offer interns job because we don’t have full qualifications. But they gave me a job and they went on and on about how the job was a gift from God. I am moving so I need to tell them how much I make a month but my job has not told me.

Most people are telling me I should just be thankful and wait until payday to see how much I make. But I don’t know when that is. I am somewhat worried that this job is a scam and I am busting my butt for no good reason. Most people are telling me not to ask but some people are telling me that if I don’t ask they’ll think I do not want to be paid at all because I don’t care enough to ask! And if I don’t ask they will use me until I am dry.

I don’t want to loose my job, so I don’t know what to do. I figured I was making minimum wage can’t I keep it at that? And if they ask me why I did not ask I will tell them that someone ELSE told me so they will pay me. But I would like to know how much I make a month. I am scared though with applying for a new apartment and I’ll write down the wrong wage and when they call my boss they won’t give me the apartment because I lied.

I mean they can’t be paying me less then minimum wage but when I did the math (subtracting the 330 they take off for taxes. Which is ridiculous. But my Father told me was how life works) I am making enough to pay for the apartment and some!

So what should I do? I can’t loose my job!

I am trying to find a creative way of asking something that won’t make it seem like I am asking. Do not say I am not acting like an adult. I have been an intern there and I love the job!

You need not tell ANYBODY how much you make. Tell the landlord of the apartment that it is private information and leave it at that.

Regarding ANY form of employment, contract, casual, voluntary, you NEED to know what the terms and conditions are. You need to know what is expected of you, just write to them and ask them what are the terms and conditions and whether you will be given a contract. In fact, nothing is binding on either party until you both know what the terms and conditions are i.e. when do I start, what actitivities do I get to do, how many hours I am expected to work each day week, how long will the contract last, whether I will be paid for the hours worked and tell them the reason is because you want to do the best you can and you want to ensure that your free time is spent developing skills (IT, specialist relating to their market etc) so you can perform better.

And always start by saying something like, Thank you for giving me this opportunity, I am so pleased to be working for your firm, I look forward to working for your firm, I am extremely grateful, BIG THEM up, companies love that.

Were you paid as an intern? Your pay should not be any less than that.

just tell your job that you need a “proof of income” so you can sign the lease at your apartment. they should understand that.

Supposing she/he isn’t being paid? Could be embarassing.

What I don’t understand is, how come the op doesn’t know whether they are being paid or not? If not being paid doesn’t matter, fine, show them where the money is that you will pay the rent from. If being paid is crucial, she/he should be aware at the point of agreeing to undertake the contract of this and how much.

The landlord NEEDS to know you can pay the rent. That’s all. If you have $5,000 in your bank account, show him a statement to put his mind at ease etc.

I just don’t understand agreeing to work and not knowing if you are being paid or not.

they wouldn’t call it a “job” if she wasn’t being paid. i think she knows she’s being paid, just not how much.

and if she’s NOT being paid, well then it’s better to find out now than at the end of the month!

What if they aren’t paying you? Is your Dad helping you out? Cause if not and your relying on getting paid and turns out they don’t your going to be in a bad financial bind when your bills come due!

What makes you think this might be a scam?
