advice help: My shih tzu has seizures. - Help.com

My shih tzu has seizures.

His vet put him on a pill for it called phenobarbital but it makes him so tired and sometimes it’s hard for him to walk because of the med. His legs just drag sometimes. I don’t know if I should keep him on it? I can’t bear to see him have seizures though. He was having them atleast once a month and now hasn’t had any since the two weeks that he’s been on the med. What would you do? Any advice would help as I have to make a decision by tomorrow for his vet appointment. Thanks

I think if the seizures could permanently damage him, I’d keep him on the meds, but if he would most likely be fine, I would take him off.

I had a Shih Tzu I paid $400 for. I gave it away and got a Labrador Retriever. I suggest you do the same.

Find out if there is an alternative to the med that you could try.

My dog was not disposed of. I gave it to an old German lady who had 7 or 8 dogs and lived on a 100 acre farm. The last time I saw her she had Ozzy (my shih tzu) sleeping in her bed with her. The dog was not happy with us and we were not happy with her. We are both better off now. I suggest you quit being anonymous and telling me what I should or should not do.

Help!!! long story, but Maggie is now failing. She was a healthy dog until she was 7 and we moved and then she had a seizure. 3 years later, she is now on pheno + bromide 110 mm/day and the pheno because we are trying to get her off the pheno because of liver failure and she is extremely lethargic. This has been a nightmare Before Bromide, she was 2 pills of pheno 15 mg a day for 2 months (gradual increase over 3 years), she is now not eating hardly at all, sorry very long story, and unfortunately I can’t explain the whole story succinctly…We are now reducing the pheno as quickly as we can. I am so scared we are going to lose her, we are talking to our vet on Thursday, sorry going on, pretty upset. We don’t know right now if the bromide was introduced too soon before she was taken off the pheno being in liver failure. Either way we are reducing both for a day until we talk to a vet. The not eating hardly at all is worrying me alot……
