I understand not wanting to put your son on medication, but have you tried it yet?

I read up on changing diet for kids like that. Maybe you should check it out.

Perhaps he doesn’t have adhd but he is behaving like a normal 7 year old? 7 year olds are by nature a little inattentive and hyper as they are children. I would bet that is why the meds didn’t work.

There is no cure for ADHD, ADD, et al. Medication can control the most severe traits of the condition helping those that need it to cope with the disorder. You are choosing to deny your son this medication that will help him. What are you expecting the doctors to do? Perform an exorcism?

If I were the school I would tell you that he would be required to be on his medication for the safety of the other students including himself. If not, he will be expelled.

If you don’t wish to be his parent any more put him in foster care. Not the best solution but at least he will get the medication he needs and be followed by concerned individuals. You seem to be looking for a cure like he had a common cold or something. ADHD is not an illness. It is a condition. Lots of people live with it with drugs and diet and counseling.

You could do with joining a support group and supporting and being supported by other parents with children with this condition. It is really difficult, I remember hearing a mother of an ADHD child say, ‘Sometimes I hate my child!’ and there were gasps but the fact is, she was saying, without support it is difficult for you which will of course impact your child. No she was not a bad person but a lady under severe stress. Medication can work, but you need people to talk to the options about this. Exercise, diet, even the environment i.e. the colours in the bedroom, layout can affect the child’s mood.

Find the national charity that deals with the issue, join their forums, find out if there are local meetings where you and your child and your partner can go and get supported and supporting. Good luck.

It sounds like youre in denial, as someone above said; if your kid has this problem and the only solution is medicine thats the way to go.

What was your experience on the medication?
Have you only tried one medication so far?

I agree with this opinion.
Doctors (general practitioner and even pediatrician) mostly are overwhelmed with.
I strongly advise you, to see a PROFESSIONAL PSYCHIATRIST SPECIALIZING in children and adolescents!

I’m sure, that a good Play Therapy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_the… ) with a good therapist will help your son much more to find his way to a more social behavior than any futile medication.

Some facts, which we don’t know, may influence his behavior:
His position in the family structure, the whole family settings (e.g. the relationship between mother and father), special events and occurrences that happened recently in his surroundings … and such things.
Not to forget: A 7 y.o. is not yet able to talk clearly about problems and bad feelings he copes with!

(The ADHD diagnosis degenerates more and more to a makeshift diagnosis to mask just some normal child behavior, and the pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money with.)

Are you saying that his medication is causing him problems in school?

FYI I’m a Mother that has been through this so would really like to chat with you about this.

I think one of the most important things a Doctor should tell a parent is, there are many differant medications that you can try if one does not work or is having bad side effects.

It takes at least 3 months on one medication to know if it is the right one or not.

Just like adults something might work well for one person and not at all for another person. So it is important especially with him so young to find out what well work for your son.

Kids with ADHD go through alot and it really is important to find out what will work for him. Many people with this have found what works best for them and live productive uninterupted lifes.

I know as a Mother this is a hard thing to cope with but realize as well what your son is going through. That needs to be the important factor here. Sorry about the response a replier saying put your kid in a foster home if you won’t take care of him.

Later in life he will try to self medicate him self just to feel normal and it will not be through a Doctor. So even more so it is so important that you work on this now with him.

I’ve seen teacher’s call CPS on Parents that won’t keep their kids on Medication and the kids are acting out in school. So you need to be thinking about this as well.

I would like to hear back from you and do understand what you are going through. There is help and it’s just a matter of what will work. It will take dilegent patience on your end to find out what will work. But once you do it will be better for your son and those around him.
