I’m so frustrated!
It seems like anytime I make an effort to reach my goals or do something I enjoy my health finds a way to interfere. I have attempted to take this math class four times now just because I have had to drop it a number of times so I could take care of my health. I understand the material and actually get good grades in the class but every time, without exception, something will get in the way resulting in my needing to drop the class. For example: last time I was about half way into the class and was maintaining a solid B. However, I ended up having to drop the course and lose all the progress I had made b/c I was hospitalized with pancreatitis. Currently, I am only one week into the same course but it looks like I may have to drop it for the same (or at least similar) reasons - my health. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! I am tired of planning my life around my illnesses! I’d like to be able to live like the 27 year old I am and not the elderly person I feel like.

I completely understand! I was a music major. Had my tonsils removed before my first major performance. Pulled a muscle in my chest wall while taking a woodwind class. Got strep throat the week of an opera I was in. Not to mention all the other random illnesses that affected my non-major classes. You just have to roll with it, as frustrating as it is. Your health is most important and everything else will work out eventually. It is super hard to take, but you will make it.

Thanks!
I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of frustration this has brought you. I wish there was something I could do to help. I hope you don’t have to drop the class, because I know how much finishing college means to you.
I wish you all the best.

Thanks, that means a lot to me.
So why do you have to drop then? Can’t you use the internet no matter where you are?

Because when you have pancreatitis you are on high doses of painkillers (doses that they’d tell you not to sign legal documents at), your busy vomiting, and your hooked up IV fluids and unable to eat. You have nurses in your room every few minutes and are lucky if you can stay awake b/c of the meds.

Oh…
well…
Can’t you test out?
Test out?
You mean take a test proving that I understand the material?
I don’t think my school offers anything like that, unfortunately.
Might not hurt to look into it. Then at least this time you could take the time to study for it while your resting. Then when you can just test out. It may be the way to go in the future too if you foretell of any problems.

I’ll look into it. Thanks!
Send out those emails and letters to the Mayo Clinic and doctors around the country . . . to teaching hospitals!
Somebody out there knows what to do!
Know how frustrating it must seem to you . . . you have been suffering as a direct result of doctors’ mediocrity! We need to change the medical payment system in this country–no cure, no pay!
I can understand, how you feel, my dear! (Cold comfort: Math was always a horror discipline for me.)
As you told earlier, your aim is to become a psychologist (if I remember rightly).
Have you ever considered to target this aim by following an other, less strictly academic educational way?
I don’t know the situation in the U.S., but in Europe it’s possible to get some education e.g. in psychotherapy and counseling by following trainings offered by approved Psychological Associations.
You’ve already gotten some good advice here, but I’ll say get well soon and good luck with your classes. Definitely look into what Dr Jackson said, that may be a great solution for you. Have you found a new specialist to help with your pancreas problem? Maybe talk to him about curing the problem instead of trying to cover up the pain.
Pink Freud-I’m so sorry to hear this. I have read some of your older posts and was able to learn a bit about what you have been going through!
I wish I had the answer and a cure to make you feel better all the time. i like what Chev was saying about contacting some clinics. Maybe there is a good Doctor out there that has more experience in what you have and could be better help to you.
You are so young to be having life changing problems like this!
I will keep you in my Prayers and thoughts and hope someone out there can help you so you can live a productive full life!
Have a nice day!
Pink Freud closed this post: Thanks for the advice and ords of encouragement. I've decided to not drop the class.
