Why Does Help.com have Anonymous?
It is good in many ways that I can think of but it seems like many people here abuse it! One poster did a post that was totally ridiculous as anonymous then accidentally revealed who he was! It was a very rude post with a attitude as well. When he revealed himself I looked at his profile and it sounded like a nice thoughtful person completly contrary to what he posted.
Then many people will reply anonymously just to make a smart A*S remark.
IDK it just seems like it gets abused. I feel from the point that people get to be friends here and want to ask for help on something that might be embarrasing it is a good thing. But other then that it seems to be abused!
What are other’s thoughts on this?

I guess…because when it comes to things that are personal, like problems and venting, confidentiality is important. it makes it easier to share. but some people are more open than others, regardless.
I’m not sure, honestly.
I don’t know. I haven’t used the anonymous feature yet, but it seems okay to me. I ran into some people on this site who claim to only reply anonymously all the time. They said they were nice and didn’t abuse it, so I just took their word for it.
That makes complete sense and is what I thought as well! What are your feelings thou on people abusing it? Or do you see that? I guess was more of my question. Thank You!

But do you notice how some “not most just some” will be so arogant and smart A**S then hide behind anonymous?

i dunno but i can see who everyone is anonymous so it is rather pointless only to use it for trolling
I’ve noticed a few anonymous people say horrible things, but if having a couple of jerks run around saying mean things without being known is the price we pay for having an anonymous function that attracts a lot of nice, embarrassed people, it doesn’t seem so bad.
It’s like when they are acting rude or being a smart a**s you want to pull away the anonymous and see who it is. For the most part ppl don’t abuse it but some do.
What exactly is considered trolling? I have wanted to ask that for awhile.

someone who goes on posts and picks a person and starts being a douche to them
someone who goes on posts and just say “poop” so many of those.
i dunno you usually know one when you see one
Much of help.com does not make sense, due to lack of initial programming effort and serious lack of updates when things kept breaking. If you look for what is wrong and doesn’t make sense, it will never end. I could tell you specific things all day long. But there is something workable and good about it that you can redirect your mind toward.
You are right and I agree! It would be cool if the mods could expose the ones that are being smart a**s thou!
That is exactly how I see anonymous being a good feature and for this paticular reason I do like it!

Thats gotta be cool that you can see who the numb warts are! You should be able to pull the anonymous off of the one’s who abuse it. That would be funny!
I’m actually very impressed with this site and not looking for anything wrong with it. It is just something I see that is annoying and misused. It has nothing to do with the programing at all and is a very good feature in many ways! Just like what Verge said I totally agree with it! And just like anything good there will always be someone that abuses it! Thank you for your thoughts!

It’d be embarrassing for people, they have the right to stay anonymous.
And how is it being rude or Smart A** just telling something that happened?
And the only way i can see it as abusing is when they use it to say mean thing to other people. keeping you identity a secret on a post because it’s embarrassing and your not proud of it. i don’t see that as an abuse. is a way to keep us safe.
If you have a problem you don’t want others to know about it is a very useful tool. Unfortunately I think it is abused too. It seems like when people are anonymous they turn into someone else and are much less considerate and make fun of people. I don’t really use it because I don’t have a problem being mean and making fun of people… bring it on.
Well first off, Anon is a popular option on many simple posting sites (not to mention any in particular…). It’s a choice, a mask that is widely used to talk in to the general public on the web. Unless you’re talking to a networking specialist, the person on the other end of the Anon mask doesn’t know the Anon’s identity. Of course this is all drop dead simple, but it’s a very powerful tool.
I think the cloak of anonymity could be employed for both good and bad purposes, as is the case for many other things. It’s really up to the individual to determine which purpose(s) to use it for.
I normally tend to refrain from using the anonymous feature because I’m afraid - and have done so many times already - that I will slip up and reveal myself. I suppose if one uses it quite regularly then there is a much lesser chance of that happening.
lol! I used it once just missing around with Verge I posted anonymously but not on my response so i gave myself away! It is obviously a good feature in the way it was meant to be used!

That was fun :)
I imagine it’s for the basic purpose of this site…people who genuinely want and need actual help probably haven’t the time or inclination to sign up straight away. Imagine if you called a helpline and they made you give all your details while you waited.
It has, unfortunately, been abused greatly. It makes me sad sometimes to see this site, which I have followed on and off for a good three years, be used as a platform to upset and antagonise the people who freqent the site as helpers.
I suppose it’s a matter of trust being abused, but then the option remains for those who really need it and ultimately, I agree with that despite the trolls we occasionally get lurking around, high on the power of anonymity.
And you are right that is not abuse in any way! What I’m talking about are the one’s who will say mean smart a**s things anonymous. There have been several post where they started anonymous and then did not reply that way accidentanly. I t happens often….and I will leave that at that! Thanks for your reply!

Lol I can definitely relate to that.
I suppose a shining example of what I consider to be a troll, would be the late (as in deleted) William.Purr though it debunks my theory of the abuse with regards to anonymity.
I see it a lot. People use the anonymous option to start a subject or comment in such a way that instantly draws attention and fierce debate, usually over an intentionally provocative subject that often times, seems to be faked simply for the pleasure of getting people angry and involved. I don’t know another way to describe a troll.
However, they are not the sole abusers of the anonymity option. There are also people, who as it has been mentioned, are registered users and then sign out and change into a completely different person - often unpleasant, rude and un-helpful.
But in my opinion, I have seen the option be abused primarily by the aforementioned, “trolls”.
Which makes me sad, because there are brilliant amazing people here who devote hours of their life to helping others. And some people have little else to do but waste time on trolling.
lol

Thats kinda what I thought a troll was and I do see that alot here. I pretty much stay away from debates and post that seem like a person is acting that way! I appreciate you explaining that to me..Thank You!
If you really want to be anonymous you can’t even hit the anonymous button. Some people pay so much attention that they remember what your anonymous avatar looks like and if you slip up once they can spot you months later…. sooooooooooo. Dr. Ralph says use the private browsing feature on Mozilla and then log in using a fake e-mail that is unverified. Or better yet use a proxy server and really be anonymous. The Help.com anonymous function doesn’t even hide you from the mods. Really though if you have that much to hide go to another web site to spill your guts or troll. Why screw up your reputation here?
Makes perfect sense to me! I was wondering about the avatar if they are the same for that person all the time. Thanks for the in sight Doc! lol

sometime i rant bout things, i really didn’t want people to know it’s me
i get so depressed, beyond belief, i just need to talk
nolateri wrote:

Well, I disagree. Every aspect of this site is only a function of either the programming or the users. So, as a user, if you want to use “anonymous” you can, and maybe it can be useful. But any built in limitations won’t really be able to be changed because nobody works on the software.
That to me is what it should be used for. It’s just the idiots that use it for other reasons that is annoying. There are some really neat people here and those who are around often become friends so having the anonymous option is good so a person can feel comfortable and not feel embarrased or judge in sharing. And can post as much stuff as they want to rant about without feeling they are over using it or something. I like it to that if you want to ask a question that you wouldn’t feel comfortable just asking you can do it here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

HA HA!! help.com has moderators to prevent from abuse…why are you anxious about abuse?many users have problems they don’t wanna reveal…so they post anonymously.
don’t worry about anonymous because moderators are always here.
Well sometime it’s better to post anonymously because when you don’t and you talk alllllllllllll the thing about yourself and your problems people make a False Image of you :|
Usually i make Posts with My Name and real Account ( Not anonymously.)
But it’s good if you don’t want to tell all who are you and i agree there some people start abusing or making fun or other or just argue without any Good reason.
If *Mod’s* can see them they should take care of them all ;-)
No one is anxious here or worried ….that was not the point. Maybe you need to read the post and follow the reply’s here before you start shooting off stuff. It’s the people that abuse the anonymous here that we are talking about!

Thanks Dyal…I guess it comes down to deciding when someone is abusing it. And the modes do take care of it if they see it! Anonymous is a very good thing for the reasons you mentioned and glad it is here for those reason’s. It’s when anonymous mis use it for their own satisfaction of hurting other’s that is annoying and hurtful to those who are being sincere here. Thanks Dyal for sharing!

knife has also bad and good aspect, good for kitchen bad for killing…every thing(body) can be abused even god.
i ranted bout my idea for Saturday, wanted to do anon but after reading your ques/rant i put under my name. I think people get so tired of trying to help
they just give up, only had “verge” reply to me.
Can you feel the love??
i know i could have invited lots, but i just feel pain,
so much pain, i can’t stop crying
Strangers maybe not….I see people really caring and reaching out here to those they have spent time getting to know. So I would have to say that many don’t seem like strangers to each other. For the good part of anonymous a person might have posted something they needed help with and many responded trying to help but for some reason they did not get it at that point. So with anonymous they can come back and ask and not feel embarrased or be made fun of! So that would be a good time to use it!I I don’t think it is their reputation they are protecting but their feelings. And we all have thouse! Thank You for your reply!

I think the main reason that help.com has anonymous is for the people that don’t really have the time or want to join the website, they just want a quick solution to their problems.
I am guilty of this as well, but once I joined, I realized that it’s not really a waste of time and the help you give can be repaid to you from someone else here.

I personally enjoy many of the anonymous ppl’s reply’s on here and it would be nice to know who is saying things that do offer help and support to those asking! I read all post and completly understand some of the topics the person would want it to be anonymous. I would most diffenantly use it if at some pont it made me feel more comfortable in asking a personal question. I think everyone here agree’s on why it is a good feature.
Because it is such a helpful feature it is frustrating when ppl use it just to be rude or make a smart a**s comment that does not help someone but actually hurts the person! And it is nice to know that the mod’s pay attention to this and can do something about it!
I feel there are many ppl here that are very sensitive and deal with alot of personal challenges that when someone makes a snyed remark even as anonymous it makes that person even feel worse and like they have hidden enemies on here! Thats what I see is bad about it!
Other then that it is good!
Thank you everyone for sharing!
I was suprised no one commented anonymously on here!
Have a nice day to all user’s here on help.com! This is the first community I have belonged to on the internet and has been an amazing experience. I Love all my friends here and look forward to being a long time help.com user!
Thank You to all the Mod’s and staff at help.com for making this such a great place to be!

I admit I have posted and replied as anonymous on occasion. Abusive..? I wouldn’t call it that.
But the only way to make the nonsensical anonymous posts go away is to not respond to them. The vast MAJORITY of them never reply back to their own post anyway. If they don’t give a rat’s behind, why should we?
That is so true….I have used anonymous a few time’s as well and for good reason’s. But you get what I’m saying so don’t need to say more.

they have anonymouses for people like me
when i say i want to go upstairs little boy running around & yelling, the dog rolling the ball & his nails going across the floor
And LAST NIGHT i was trying to sleep when i heard screaming
i was getting ready to call the police when i heard their bed springs bouncing.
and beat them all with a cattle prod
